Yoga can provide a multitude of physical and mental health benefits.</p>
<p>What you will realize soon after beginning yoga is that you will have greater flexibility. Even in the beginner classes, as the instructor takes you through the simplest forms and stretches, you will feel your body flex and become more fluid. One of the most gratifying things about this is that it takes a very small amount of time to start noticing an appreciable difference; within a few sessions you will start to enjoy the benefits of your new exercise.</p>
<p>Yoga also works as a preventative measure. In young children, it will make them more graceful and less prone to the childhood clumsiness that results in sprains and broken bones. Similarly, especially when it is started early, yoga can be quite habit-forming, ensuring a lifetime habit of holistic health and fitness. Stress is a part of life and learning to manage it early is an excellent life skill for a child to learn. Yoga focuses on dealing with stress in an appropriate fashion. Yoga also encourages a balanced life, and thus combing yoga with a balanced diet is a great way to enhance your family&#8217;s overall level of wellness.</p>
<p>Yoga also complements a wide variety of activities. If your family is involved in a wide number of sports, you can bring them all together using yoga. Whether it&#8217;s football or tennis, track or swimming, yoga can add another range of flexibility to muscles that need it.</p>
<p>Yoga is also great for the family on the go. While longer practices are better for you, shorter practices are also very effective. Yoga can be practiced at odd times, and sometimes just for five minutes depending on what your schedule allows. While, like anything worth doing, yoga does require a certain amount of effort, this activity is still very easy to fit into your busy life. For example, one of the yoga poses involves standing on one foot and improving your balance and posture. This exercise can be done anywhere, whether you&#8217;re waiting for the bus or getting through the line at the grocery store. Yoga can also be beneficial for anyone, adult or child alike, who spends a lot of time at desk. There are hand and arm exercises that can prevent muscle cramps and prevent more serious problems down the road.</p>
<p>Yoga is excellent for people of every fitness level or inclination, so don&#8217;t let your family miss out on this valuable technique.</p>

There are many benefits to this aerobic exercise, and very few other forms of workout cover as much ground and do it as thoroughly.</p>
<p>No matter what physical shape your family is in, water aerobics has a speed for them. Just by virtue of being in the water and working against its resistance, you&#8217;re burning calories and working your muscles. As a matter of fact, when participating in water aerobics, you are exercising virtually all of your muscles constantly. The resistance of the water is a gentle, always present factor, one that you learn to adjust to but still manages to give you benefits.</p>
<p>Water aerobics are quite gentle and thus effective for a wide range of fitness levels and expertise. A beginner can hop in and learn the basics and someone with a bit more experience pump up the pace by speeding things up or adding more repetitions. A typical class starts out with a gentle stretching and warm-up and moves from shallow water to deep water. Ideally, a session starts in water that waist-deep and then you move to an area where the water comes up to your mid-chest.</p>
<p>Due the buoyancy provided by the water, this workout is very good for people with joint issues, a problem that can strike regardless of age or weight. The water supports your weight rather than your legs and allows muscles that were previously tightened in use to relax and work.</p>
<p>You will be surprised by the sheer variety of activity that is available in water aerobics and the health benefits they can provide. Walking, running and jogging are all possible -if done more slowly than on land &#8211; and the added resistance of the water can aid in preventing heart disease while working the legs and glutes. For people already comfortable with the resistance of the water, arm and ankle weighs can be added to make things more interesting. There&#8217;s also a lot of fun that can be had with water aerobics. Games can range from Marco Polo for younger participants and water polo for a more advanced class.</p>
<p>This activity can be a lot of fun for the whole family; it takes place in a pool and there&#8217;s always the promise of getting to swim and play after class. If you have older children who take part in other sports, water aerobics can really complement them. Water aerobics is often used for rehabilitation after sports injuries and as maintenance for other sports as well. This variety of cross training is extremely valuable to both athletes and amateurs as it can prevent repetitive stress issues for various parts of the body and keep the body as whole functioning well.</p>
<p>Water aerobics is an activity that can greatly benefit your family, whether you&#8217;re just looking for some fun, or you&#8217;re looking to build up some serious strength and endurance.</p>

<p>A good hike is a memorable experience for kids who have grown up in the city. It allows them to be truly immersed in nature through the best possible medium, that is, their own eyes, ears, hands and feet. Even better, hiking is the easiest and least expensive outdoor recreation activity, so you don&#8217;t have to sink big bucks into it in order to make it fun.</p>
<p>There are a number of health benefits from hiking, which anyone of any age can appreciate. The first and most obvious benefit is from the exercise. Hiking can help you shed pounds and develop muscle tone, especially in your legs, as you traverse the countryside. Depending on the terrain where you will be hiking, you can burn calories heading down ravines or up cliff sides. Hiking is also an insurance against heart disease; the aerobic exercise of scrambling all over the countryside is surprisingly good for you.</p>
<p>Another significant benefit is to your mental health. As much as you might think you need some time off, you certainly aren&#8217;t alone!  Just because your children aren&#8217;t working 40 hours a week doesn&#8217;t mean they necessarily have it easy and you can be sure that they&#8217;ll appreciate the time away as much as you do.</p>
<p>Hikes are also customizable in that there&#8217;s no set requirement for what needs to be done when. If a trail is seems too challenging or doesn&#8217;t take things like past injuries or small children, you can simply find one that better suits your needs. For a family just starting out, a trail that is mostly flat and short is probably for the best. Hiking covers a wide variety of experiences, starting from a half-mile hike around a campground, to packing up your teenagers and taking on the Appalachian Trail.</p>
<p>The act of hiking causes a release of endorphins, as well as releasing adrenaline, which fuels your body&#8217;s flight or flight response. If the adrenaline is not released, it can build up and make you feel tense and on-edge; essentially, your body is always wondering whether it should run and hide or take a swing. This can be even more exhausting than taking a long hike!  A long hike can help you release that energy, leaving you pleasantly worn out and less concerned about the stress in your life. It won&#8217;t make them go away, but good exercise and decent rest can really put things into perspective.</p>
<p>Remember, the next time you feel the need to cut loose and take a walk on the wild side, grab your hiking boots and trail mix and take the whole family with you!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Learning to swim is not only great exercise, it can be a great way for your family to bond, too!  There are many reasons to learn to swim, but if you do it together, you&#8217;ll make lots of memories together.</p>
<p>Unlike sports like football or baseball, which focus specifically on muscular development, swimming is an activity that concentrates on full-body health. While swimming will give you great muscle tone, it will also slim down the body and burn fat. When you move against the resistance of the water, you work most of your major muscle groups.</p>
<p>With swimming, your family can also set its own pace. Whether you want to go for an all out competition to see who can swim the most laps, or just swim along slowly, savoring the feel of the water, time spent swimming is time spent being active and away from the television or computer.</p>
<p>Another nice thing about swimming is that it is specifically low-impact. The water supports your body and takes the stress off of your joints, resulting in a workout that is unaffected by your knees or hips complaining. If you&#8217;ve had an injury in your family, an event that can throw everyone for quite a loop, swimming might be a good way to get everyone back in shape. When an accident happens, everyone&#8217;s routine gets disrupted and we stop being as diligent about things like eating well and exercising. Swimming is free of stress, and it is very easy to take away the competitive aspect and focus on refining your own skill.</p>
<p>Essentially, with swimming, you get more results with less effort than with other forms of exercise. Additionally, you put less wear and on your body with swimming than with other sports.</p>
<p>There is also a lot of variety in swimming, making it a terrific exercise for the whole family. No matter what your level of expertise is, a pool is always lots of fun. If you have younger children, it&#8217;s never too early to ease them into the water under the watchful eye of swim instructors. They&#8217;ll be happy splashing around while you&#8217;re swimming your laps and perfecting your crawl. As they get older, swimming classes are another great way for them to meet other children and socialize and learn together.</p>
<p>No matter how old they are, pools are places to play if you&#8217;re a child. By fostering their enjoyment of the activity, you can encourage down a lifelong path of fitness. Unlike other sports, which might be seen as work, swimming always has connotations of playing.</p>
<p>You can also tie swimming to an event like a future family vacation. If you have plans to visit a beach, what better way to get everyone excited about it than by ensuring that they can all enjoy themselves as much as possible?  For smaller children, you can explain the difference between a beach and a pool and for older children, you can get them excited about looking around underwater and seeing a living world.</p>
<p>There are lots of ways to make a splash, and swimming is the one that keeps everyone in shape and cool for summer!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If you&#8217;re looking for a way to get your kids and spouse off the couch and into a healthier lifestyle, you should consider looking for a good martial arts dojo. There are many aspects of martial arts training that will recommend it to a family seeking to have some fun together and to stay in shape.</p>
<p>First, there is a wide variety to choose from and no matter what your family is looking for, you can probably find one with a philosophy that will suit you!  If you wouldn&#8217;t mind the members of your family being more assertive, consider taking classes in a martial art that competes. Tae Kwon Do, the Korean martial art, competes at all ages, and you can instill a sense of pride and achievement in your children no matter how they do at the tournaments. For a more gentle experience, consider a class that has no contact. In these classes the student&#8217;s only competitor is himself or herself. Aikido is one martial art that often has classes where contact is minimal and the object is to escape from or immobilize your opponent as opposed to damaging them.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s always more fun to work together!  While most martial arts classes separate the children and the adults, you&#8217;ll have plenty to talk about as you&#8217;ll be learning the same techniques, just with varying degrees of intensity. One of the exercises you can bring home is stretching, which is valuable whenever you do it. Some stretches require two people and this can be a great way to take a few minutes and talk about what&#8217;s been going on in your lives. In addition, stretching is good whether you&#8217;ve been sitting in class or hunched over a computer all day; it can prevent injuries and repetitive stress.</p>
<p>Martial arts are a great way to get fit, as well. No matter what you&#8217;re looking for, whether it&#8217;s more flexibility or more muscle or better coordination, you can find a class tailored to your needs. If you&#8217;re more interested in a hard workout, look for the more intensive, competition-oriented martial arts, where you&#8217;re lucky if you have any breath to stand with afterwards. An example of this might be capoeira, the Brazilian martial art. It is in your best interests to do some research into the martial art in question before you start; does it concentrate on the parts of the body that you&#8217;re looking to work?  Tae kwon do encourages strong legs, while jujitsu will help build stronger arms.</p>
<p>Martial arts are also great ways to improve mental health. They encourage focus and rational reactions. You will never find a martial art that promotes rash or ill-considered actions. This can be an excellent way for a child who suffers from Attention Deficit Disorder or is just plain antsy to learn to concentrate.</p>
<p>Find a martial art that suits you and jump in!  You won&#8217;t regret it; it&#8217;s a wonderful gift to present to both your family and yourself.</p>

<p>Baseball is a historically cooperative sport and it emphasizes an overall fitness that is very important to anyone concerned about his/her general health. This traditional national pastime has been part of American culture for almost 200 years and has shown no sign of slacking off yet!  Originally a New York invention, baseball quickly spread to become one of the most popular sports around.</p>
<p>One of the first benefits of baseball in terms of health for the participant is the fact that this activity exercises a variety of different muscle groups, unlike other sports that only address a limited range of exercise. This holistic approach to healthy allows for a more well-rounded exercise regimen, as well a lower likelihood of repetitive stress injuries to the participant. Two areas that baseball is good for developing are the lower legs and thighs. In a good program, there will be a regimen of warm-ups and stretches that will instill in your family members a good habit of making sure that they are ready before participating strenuous activity.</p>
<p>Due to the aerobic nature of baseball, things like heart disease can be prevented. This is certainly an event that will get your blood pumping no matter where you are, whether that&#8217;s pitching or keeping an eye out for fly balls in the outfield. Baseball also emphasizes a great deal of preparatory exercise and stretches that, even taken apart from the sport itself, has a lot of value to any individual.</p>
<p>Another area that baseball address is that of hand-eye coordination and ability. Baseball involves a combination of movements that keeps a participant constantly alert and ready to act, and appropriately prepares the participant for this. A certain agility and dexterity is instilled in baseball players, both valuable traits that can be acquired over time.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re interested in getting your family involved in baseball, there are a number of ways to do it. If you have young children, Little League organizations are relatively easy to find. If your children are older, you can also find summer community programs for them. To get everyone involved, you should volunteer!  Most organizations of this sort require a great deal of effort on the part of the community to make them function effectively, and they will certainly be grateful for the help.</p>

Though it may not occur to you at first glance, horseback riding has many things to recommend it in terms of health and fitness. There are several areas in your life where horseback riding can benefit you.</p>
<p>Despite the fact that this is an extremely physical activity, it is possible to participate no matter what your level of physical coordination is. In fact, horseback riding is used quite often as physical therapy for a variety of ailments. This is especially ideal if your family has several needs that need to be filled by a sport you can do together. There are programs available for every level of rider, from beginner to expert.</p>
<p>One area that will be improved almost immediately is posture. Balance and posture are things that will become second nature after a little bit of riding. From the moment you get on a horse, you will start learning the balance you need to stay on. In this activity, you&#8217;ll be ground through your hips, and the movement of the horse causes you to strengthen your core muscles and improve your posture in general. Exercises that will help this can range from merely walking the horse at first to more active exercises like grabbing rings at a trot.</p>
<p>Your muscles and joints are another area that can greatly benefit from horseback riding. The movements of the horse force you develop good muscle tone, this happen automatically and instinctively. While this is most noticeable in your thighs and calves, there is a a more holistic effect going on as well. Riding will also improve the muscle tone and flexibility of the entire body. As you learn to use your body with the horse, you will develop a greater range of movement that will enable you to become healthier as well as a better rider. This is an excellent activity for children of all ages as they will develop a foundation for health that can carry them through their adult hood. Whatever your family&#8217;s situation with muscle development, horseback riding can help!  Whether the muscle tone was not developed or too tense, horseback riding can provide an excellent equilibrium.</p>
<p>Besides the physical benefits available to horseback riders, there is also a great deal to be said regarding the emotional and cognitive benefits as well. While horseback riding, you&#8217;ll be outdoors and getting to know an animal that you may not have had much experience with before. Depending on what approach you decide to use, you and your children can get to know your mounts quite well and learn a great deal about caring for animals and how they function.</p>

<p>So grab your family and hit the desk with these fitness ideas.</p>
<p>A)  Get everyone involved in monthly fitness activity planning. If you don&#8217;t take time to make time, it probably won&#8217;t happen, or at least it will be less likely. Find out when each family member is free and schedule a biking trip to a local park for a picnic, for example. Or get on the zoo&#8217;s mailing list and attend one of their functions outdoors. Get on mailing lists for your local YMCA, Recreation Center and other activity centers, too, and participate in their activities.</p>
<p>B)  Fitness includes healthy eating, so involve each family member in this, too. Get cookbooks from the library and make copies of recipes to experiment with, asking everyone to share in the planning. Try not only regional and popular dishes but also foreign recipes to add some spice in your life. Then take turns cooking and cleaning up.</p>
<p>C)  Learn low-fat meal preparation methods from books and helpful magazine and online articles. Adapt them to suit the needs of your family.</p>
<p>D)  Try fun fitness activities together like square dancing, joga, climbing, karate. See what&#8217;s available at your gym or Jazzercise center and sign up for a trial.</p>
<p>E)  Beverage choices are important. So look into investing in a water filter for your kitchen to avoid spending so much on bottled water. Save sugary soda for Friday fun night.</p>
<p>F)  Take care of your health and teach your other family members to do the same: brushing teeth, gums and tongue after each meal and snack; washing hands regularly to get rid of unwanted germs; using sunscreen for outdoor activities; using good lighting for better eye care; and more.</p>
<p>G)  Ask your family doctor about vitamins and mineral supplements for everyone.</p>
<p>H)  Call local hotels to see about using their pool for family fun. Many places offer day, monthly or other rates for nearby residents.</p>
<p>I)  Plan fitness activities with your neighbors. There are plenty of National Parks for camping where you can even rent Tee Pees and small cabins. Plan an outing together and hike, fish, enjoy the beach, swim, ski, go kayaking or canoeing; in short&#8230; enjoy the great outdoors.</p>

<p>More than 1 million copies of DDR have been sold for the home, showing its popularity across the board, and its popularity among 12-16 year olds is causing some real notice to be taken regarding its health benefits in a country where childhood obesity is becoming a serious problem. Dr. Richard Adler, of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis is planning a six-month study of DDR and weight loss in an effort to give the game legitimacy among physicians.</p>
<p>While some care must be taken to make sure that players that have joint problems, DDR can be a highly aerobic, customizable exercise. Every aspect of the game can be changed to meet the level of play desired, whether you&#8217;re interested just learning to hit the arrows on time, or learning how to do complex spins and jumps in time with the music. There are also competitive and cooperative modes that can be used, depending on the wishes of the players.</p>
<p>For something that started out as a cult phenomenon, DDR has entered homes across the country and America is beginning to reap the benefits. Better muscle tone and endurance are two benefits that most people gain after playing DDR for a while, and some people have lost a great deal of weight playing on this device.</p>
<p>Getting started, it might be best to take your family to the arcade to see if the game is for you. If you decide that this is something you&#8217;d like to invest in, it will be worth your while to buy an at-home version, as arcade quarters can really add up!</p>

There are many benefits to cycling that anyone, any age or level of physical fitness can enjoy.</p>
<p>Cycling is a good activity for any age level as it can guard against a wide range of chronic problems and improve on existing as well. Also, as it is an aerobic exercise, it will also help prevent heart disease and give you a better overall level of fitness, both in muscle tone and flexibility.</p>
<p>Normal cycling, just getting on your bike and not racing off, is an excellent form of aerobic exercise. You can reduce the risks of heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity and diabetes. If you and your family take up this form of exercise, you begin to notice the benefits very soon. According to some studies, you can detect a noticeable difference in your endurance and muscle tone within six weeks after cycling a short distance four times a week. Most obviously leg strength is improved dramatically, making the participants more graceful and less likely to trip in general.</p>
<p>Another terrific benefit of cycling is being able to take your family out of doors. Depending on your location and options, there are many places where you will be able to bike. Look for one that suits your family well, whether it is a more isolated forest trail or a busy park setting where you&#8217;ll be able to be in contact with many people.</p>
<p>You may be concerned whether cycling will be good for all members of your family. You can set your mind at ease, as, given the customizable nature of this exercise, a comfortable level can be found for people of any age. If Grandma or Grandpa will be joining you, gentle cycling, with its emphasis on hips and thigh muscle tone, can be a fun way to guard against things like the injuries associated with falling. Even very small children can be included, even if they&#8217;re too small to ride a bike!  It costs very little to have child-seat set up on the back of your own bike, or to get a small trailer that will ride behind. Your child will love the opportunity to participate and you&#8217;ll be making great memories that last a lifetime.</p>
<p>When you&#8217;re trying to get everyone in shape and have fun doing it, very few activities are as all-inclusive and provide an overall degree of health and fitness than cycling.</p>

<p>If you&#8217;re interested in building a family adventure to remember, as well as instilling in your children a lifetime habit of enjoying the natural world, canoeing might be exactly what you&#8217;re looking for. There are trips that can suit any family, from beginner to expert or any combination thereof. There are trips that can be as simple as a few hours to ones that last three weeks, depending on your needs.</p>
<p>One of the most appealing aspects of canoeing is the fact that it facilitates a whole-body, holistic approach to health. It addresses both physical and mental wellbeing and stress of any sort can be alleviated on a canoe trip.</p>
<p>First and most obviously is the cardiovascular benefits of this activity. Canoeing is an aerobic activity that gives a good work out to the chest and arm muscles as you drive the paddle into the water and propel your craft forward. This is activity that is best preceded with some gentle stretching and a brief warm-up, a good habit to instill in anyone, as this avoids cramps and injuries from over-exertion. As the landscape goes by, there is no chance for boredom and even the most unimpressed teen will find something to enjoy about the experience.</p>
<p>Another factor is the stress relief that a canoe trip can provide from your day to day life. As stressed as you are, don&#8217;t believe that your kids have it easy, either!  They&#8217;ll love the chance to get away from it all just like you will.</p>
<p>The preparation for a canoeing trip can be one that the whole family takes part in. After a quick consultation with physician, you can start getting ready for your trip with a daily regimen of stretching and exercise. While this is not necessarily required, it is a good idea to get your family used to the constant, though mostly light physical exertion of paddling a canoe</p>
<p>Of course, depending on what sort of canoeing you and your family decides is the best way to spend their time, you might really need that warm-up!  Whitewater rafting, for instance, which involves canoeing on a moving body of water, can be quite intense and may be more suitable for a family with older children. This can be an extremely rewarding activity, however, and can be a great experience to bond and meet challenges together.</p>
<p>Canoeing might be an activity you take on every weekend or just once a year in a two-week trip, but whatever your commitment, it will reward you in many ways.</p>
