Many people suffer from stage fright and this is specially the case with shy people. By sharpening your presentation skills, you can control your fear and combat shyness effectively.

Importance of presentation skills

Many people look upon presentations as highly dangerous scenarios. This happens because of your lack of confidence and performance anxiety. Presentation skills provide you with ammunition that helps in controlling fear and anxiety. At the same time, they make you more confident and much more in control of the situation.

Improving presentation skill

Oral presentation is the most challenging of all types of presentations. For improving these skills, you need to begin by believing in your abilities and potentials fully. Merely learning skills gets you nowhere, if you don't believe you can use them. Your appearance matters a lot on stage. As far as possible, you should look neat and tidy and wear outfits suitable to the occasion. The other important skill is that of using your voice, gestures and body language effectively. These things mostly seem to be in your control and the more you practice, the greater will be your control over them.

If you are extremely shy then you need to practice deep breathing exercise along with relaxation technique to control your anxiety. You can even infuse a sense of humour and joke about your shyness in front of an audience. Letting them know you are shy, will reduce your anxiety effectively. You need a lot of practice however, before facing an audience. The best place to start is by talking to the mirror. You can then practice your skills with your family members and friends. You can keep adding members to this support groups until you have a fair amount of appreciate audience to practice your skills on. Before any kind of presentation, you need to think positively about the outcome. In case you make any mistakes while presenting, it is necessary to keep going and cover your tracks as well as possible. Presence of mind along with practice is the perfect recipe for a successful presentation.

Do you believe imitation is no good? Think again. You can now deal with your shyness by identifying and learning the behaviour of your favorite role model.

The role of Role models

We are often actively engaged in observing the reactions of others. Some people make an immediate impression on our minds and we wish to be just like them. If we are exposed to these people for a long time, we start modeling their behavior. Shyness can be learnt from inappropriate role models. To unlearn this process, you need to get back to the basics and identify role models who can help you, overcome shyness.

Identifying role models

Appropriate role models help you understand the process of social interactions along with different techniques of conversation skills. Howver, you need to be very cautious while selecting your role models, as any mistake here, will intensify your problem further. The personal characteristics of your role models matter a lot. For this purpose, Age, gender, race and other personal details need to be taken into account. For example choosing young and outgoing models can pose a problem, as many a times you will find it difficult to adopt their energy levels.

You should also take into account the environmental and social factors that play a role in your model's life. Some people have all the necessary facilities that enables them to be more outgoing and gregarious than others. As far as possible, the role models should be similar to you in terms of status, financial abilities as well as cultural and personal values. Prefer choosing role models who you know rather than those you see only on the silver screen You should also avoid going by the outward charm alone. You need to understand the internal characteristics of the person to make sense of his personality. Avoid depending upon the model for every solution as the best of people make mistakes. You can safely follow the footsteps of your role model for overcoming shyness only if you are careful enough to preserve your individuality in the process.

Millions of people suffer from shyness due to some reason or the other. However, the level of shyness differs across people and across situations. Gauging the level of your shyness is very necessary for accurate diagnosis.

Levels of shyness

Shyness can be mild, chronic or acute. It can be limited to specific events or it can be generalized. Some people can function very well despite shyness while others do not. Some people are painfully shy and this can almost be equivalent to social phobia. Shyness can also be accompanied by some forms of anxiety disorders like panic attacks. Therefore shy people differ amongst themselves in terms of intensity, frequency and magnitude. You need to correctly gauge your shyness level in order to get accurate help.

Ways of gauging shyness levels

Level of shyness can be correctly assessed in many different ways. There are many psychological tests like self-report inventories that accurately estimate the exact level of shyness. These tests are standardized and are used by psychologists and counselors for diagnostic purposes. Another important technique is that of observation. You can observe your own personality and keep check on your shyness level. You need to assess your shyness against the situation, the symptoms displaced and your mental and biological reactions. For instance you will find your heartbeat increasing when you approach the member of the opposite sex but not while talking to a child.

Therefore you need to be very alert if you want to gauge your shyness level with this method. There are also many disadvantages associated with observation as you can overestimate or underestimate your symptoms consciously or unconsciously. The third way of assessing shyness is by taking the help of online shyness quizzes and tests. You simply need to log on and tick against the symptoms. You will be provided with your score along with its interpretation. However, such quizzes are not always accurate and lack depth. There are therefore many challenges for accurately gauging your shyness level. However, with proper caution and use of appropriate tools you can gauge your shyness level effectively.

Shyness prevents you from reaching out to new people and new situations. However, you can learn to deal with shyness, with the help and support of your family members.

The role of family

Family is the nucleus of society. For shy people, it tends to be the only comfortable part of society. Family members therefore have the capacity to influence the person in a positive way. By gaining support from family members you will have emotional support, moral strength and most of all acceptance.

Seeking help

The most common mistake we all make is that of waiting for the family to make the first move. However, your family may be prevented from reaching out to you because of your lack of communication. The first thing you need to do is to accept your problem. Don't take it for granted that the members know every bit about your shyness issue. Be very clear while communicating your fears and doubts and don't be afraid to go into details. This will help the members to understand the exact nature of your problem and will make it easier for them to give you required help.

You should be clearly aware of the nature of help you expect from your family members. For example, you may need your family to support you emotionally and not to protect you from certain situations. This needs to be made very clear right in the beginning. Allow the members to reach out to you. Don't hold back as you need every ounce of support you can get. You should try and keep your family informed about all your little triumphs and set backs. The more you share; stronger will be your bond. Try and discuss this issue even with younger family members like children or younger siblings. This increased understanding with your family members will prevent them from having wrong perceptions about your personality. By accepting help, you will find this process of overcoming shyness a lot easier and will help you to bridge the gap with your family in the bargain.

Finding a support group

Finding a shoulder to cry on can be very difficult if you have limited option in terms of acquaintances. Shy people have intimate relationship with few others. However, they cannot boast of having a large social group that will provide opportunities for interactions. Finding a formal social support group can therefore be the best option. There are many psychologists and other mental health professionals who organize and arrange such support groups. These groups meet weekly or monthly under the supervision of counselors. Usually, the first few sessions are reserved for establishing rapport with the counselor and other members of the group.

All the group members are on an equal footing and vary only in their intensity of shyness. The next couple of sessions are then arranged in ways, wherein people can express their feelings comfortably. Some sessions are taken to train the group members in aspects of social, and communication skills. The most important aspect of such support groups is however related to the opportunity of meeting and interacting with like-minded people. This provides emotional support and motivation to overcome shyness. Practicing newly acquired social skills with other group member helps one to face the greater world with ease and a great deal of confidence. Support groups can also be acquired in the form of neighbours and friends. However, the major issue of such a social group is that, it will be lenient with you and its role will be restricted only to sympathize with you. Finding a like-minded support group is the best way of combating shyness effectively.

Communication takes place in two ways. You communicate verbally as well as non-verbally. Development of nonverbal cues plays an important role in controlling shyness.

Non-verbal cues and shyness

Development of non-verbal cues enables you to have command over communication. It gives you confidence and a much-needed coping mechanism to deal with anxiety and shyness. Non-verbal cues also help you have some level of control over your reactions. For example, you can shy away from talking, but at the same time you can show your interest through body language.

Enhancing non verbal cues

Non-verbal communication needs to be developed in the context of the culture. Special emphasis should be placed on development of eye contact, understanding facial expressions, and development of body language. Eye contact plays a major role in communication. Too much or too little eye contact can create discomfort in your partner. Therefore you should adjust your level of eye contact taking into account the comfort level of the other person. You need to pay attention to your facial expressions while talking. Frowning too much for instance is inappropriate in many situations.

Try and pay attention to all these minor details while interacting. You should also be conscious of your body language when approaching or responding to others. Effective body language expressed through gestures and postures signals the level of confidence. It also puts another person at ease and facilitates positive interactions. You should avoid making use of excessive gestures and movements while interacting. It can be quiet disturbing to the other person. Another important area of non-verbal cues is the use of voice through proper pitch, sound quality and pace of talking. Effective use of voice creates an immediate impression on the minds of other people. However, talking too softly, or too fast can create barrier in getting your message across. To enhance all these cues you need to practice constantly under an expert's guidance. You also need to have patience as old habits die-hard. However, with patience and will, you can enhance your non-verbal cues and control your shyness in the process.

Shyness leads to avoidance of people. However, to overcome shyness, you need to have a strong emotional support from your near and dear ones.

How to enlist support

Deciding to have support is one thing and obtaining it is quiet another. To gather emotional support you have to come out of the closet and accept your shyness before others. Letting them know you are shy can in many ways lead to unexpected results. For one thing you will understand that your problem was obvious to others. Many misconceptions about your personality will vanish. For instance shy people are always misunderstood as arrogant and proud. You can then start asking yourself some important questions like whom you would like to include in your support group, and why. Sometimes we also indirectly demand support from others. Like throwing hints in normal conversation about your problem. However, many shy people are not able to be so diplomatic in their speech. It is also best to approach your problem directly. Besides enlisting the support of your family and friends, you can even declare your intentions to your other colleagues and neighbours. This may seem an arduous task, but the greater the emotional support, greater will be your chance for overcoming shyness. If the task of talking people into supporting you still seems impossible, then there are numerous support groups and group therapies that you can take advantage of through your local mental health centers and other such seminars.

Self-motivation system is an asset, which perks us up in difficult times and helps us cope with our problem in an effective way.

Self-motivation and shyness

To overcome shyness, the first step is to motivate oneself. Even summoning up enough courage to seek help requires motivation and inner drive. The most important advantage of self-motivation is that we all are gifted with this self-help mechanism. It also helps you drag your attention away from obstacles and focus it on the target instead.

Developing self motivation

The first step of developing an effective self-motivation system is by accepting your problem. It is important to understand that you are not the only one affected with this problem. Accepting this philosophy keeps self-pity at bay. Until and unless you ward off self-pity, you cannot move ahead. You can then do goal setting and set your target. Your target of overcoming shyness needs to be unique to yourself. Refrain from setting goals, like performing on a stage within a week just because someone else has done it. You can set your goal on a paper and stick it up on the wall as a constant reminder. Reward yourself when you are able to reach sub goals no matter how trivial they seem.

You can have your own self-motivation mantra that you can chant each day like ' everything is great' to nudge yourself the right way. Declaring your target to close family and friends is another great way to have a support group. Relaxation and imagery are great techniques to motivate yourself. Relaxation involves deep breathing exercises that help you calm yourself and combat anxiety while imagery helps one to imagine things like reaching a target, which is a great moral booster. For practicing these techniques however, you need professional help. Other important therapy is that of hypnosis. This too needs the help of expert hypnotherapist. Inspirational books and television programs can also make a difference in the way you think and act. As you develop self-motivation and implement it in your fight against shyness, your chances of success are guaranteed.

Many shy people have fix set of attitudes about interactions. They view all forms of social interactions as anxiety promoting situations. To overcome shyness, these attitudes need to be modified, replaced or changed.

Developing interactions

Shy people avoid interactions because of the fear of being evaluated or ridiculed. They are also extra sensitive about their small imperfections. For developing interactions, these fears need to be removed. You can develop positive attitude towards others by understanding the way in which social interactions actually work. You also need to view other humans as approachable individuals rather than fearsome monsters. You can practice having interactions with people whom you are most comfortable with. You can then safely interact with strangers on a confident note. Don't look upon interactions as chores; rather interact with others for gaining knowledge and for sharing your opinions and views. Don't miss a single opportunity you get for interacting with people. You can even initiate conversation with your maid, your hairstylist and even the butcher as you wait for your service.

Recognize and identify a common interest you share with your partner and talk about it. You will find your ideas flowing quiet smoothly if you have something common talk about. You also need to change your negative attitude towards society as a whole. Many people focus on the negative aspects of society and judge the entire population on the basis of handful of individuals. This creates many problems, as your outlook towards others will prevent you from fully understanding and evaluating social experiences. Try and look on the brighter side of things. As far as possible you should avoid passing judgments on the speaker or the situation whether they are good or bad as passing judgments without adequate information can create biases in your mind. You should also avoid going by the stereotypes. This prevents you from actually understanding the individuals fully irrespective of their race class and creed.

By developing interactive attitude towards people, you can control your shyness enjoy interactions and even make new friends in the bargain.

Ever wondered why you feel shy despite trying every trick in the book to prevent it? You can just be anxious.

Anxiety and shyness

The answer seems simple, but it is the truth. Many a times we try to tackle our shyness the wrong way. Shyness is not a sudden phenomenon. It is the result of anxious thoughts supported fully by your imagination. Many a times anxious thoughts prevent you from perceiving the reality. Anxiety and shyness results in a vicious cycle where anxiety causes shyness and shyness in turn leads to further anxiety. Thus, by attacking anxiety you will be able to control your shyness.

Decreasing anxiety levels

You can bring down your anxiety levels by first controlling your thought processes. That does not mean that you avoid thinking, you just redirect your thoughts in other ways. It is also necessary to think about positive events. Anxiety levels can be decreased with the help of breathing exercises and regular practice of Yoga. A brusque thirty minutes walk each morning is also beneficial. There is a popular notion that if you talk to yourself firmly against feeling anxious you can relax. This may or may not work for you. Some find this method effective. However a vast majority of people believe that it actually increase their anxiety. This makes sense as we start pressurizing ourselves to achieve control. Instead, the best way to tackle anxiety is to accept the fact that you are anxious and then try and prevent the symptoms instead.

Once you have gained control over your heartbeat and have stopped trembling, you will realize that the actual anxiety you feel is very insignificant. Shyness involves anxiety about being criticized. In such situations, it is best to remember all the compliments you had received in the past no matter how small they are rather than brood over criticism you have not yet faced. You can also engage in some activity or hobby to distract yourself before a major social event. However, if you feel that nothing is working, it is time to seek professional help.

Shyness and work place

Shyness creates many barriers in your work place. It prevents you from putting forth your ideas and opinions. You may even find yourself plagued with extra work due to the inability to say no. You tend to hold back during important discussions and shy away from presentations. Your inability to express your ideas may as well cost you your job.

Developing confidence

Confidence cannot be built in a day, it is a long gradual process, which you should be mentally prepared to face. You need to take active decisions and train yourself to improve your confidence. You should have complete idea about your whole self as well as your problem. Shyness varies from person to person in terms of intensity and frequency. While some people are able to function effectively despite shyness, others have painful experiences, exhibit anxiety symptoms and some have panic attacks. You need to impartially assess you own level of shyness and then seek appropriate help. You should be open about your shyness by letting your boss and collogues know you are shy.

Their cooperation will make a big difference, and your anxiety will lessen significantly. You can take an example from shy leaders and successful, yet shy corporate managers. That will enable you to understand the way you too can control shyness and function effectively in your work place. Confidence can be built by developing some skills essential for succeeding in your profession. Presentation skills, communication skills are just a few of them. Try and meet deadlines and fulfill the expectation of your job profile to the best of your abilities. This not only boosts your confidence, but will not give anyone a chance to blame your shyness for inefficiency. Try and enjoy what you are doing, negative thoughts about your personality can intensify your problem. By developing confidence, you can overcome shyness and succeed at your workplace in the process.

Shyness and people don't mix. However, to overcome shyness you need all the help and support you can get. Friends and family are perfect for this task.

Sharing your problem

Shyness creates many problems in life. It leads to withdrawal from society and you may find it difficult to make new friends. This ability also enables you to protect your friendship with the few friends you have. This can prevent you from accepting your problem in front of your friends and family out of the fear of being rejected. By breaking this barrier, you can share your problem with the closed ones without difficulty. For this, you need to make a mental or actual list of your close friends. You can selectively choose special and empathetic friends from the list or you can choose them all. You can then arrange a get together or a simple dinner and invite your close friends. You can reveal your problem and show your desire to accept help. You will find that merely accepting your problems and sharing your apprehensions will provide you relief and comfort. Any additional help you get after that will be an added bonus.

Advantages

Shy people are quiet comfortable to be around close friends and family members. Talking to friends is therefore much more easier than talking with a psychiatrist. Close friends are accessible and are forever ready to learn about your problems and difficulties. This acceptance despite having problems provides welcome relief to shy people who are constantly afraid of being evaluated. Friends offer many solutions and advise pertaining to the problem. At times they can boost up your spirit and convince you to overcome your problem. You can approach society with the help of your friends who will make your task easier during introductions and general interactions with new people. They provide a willing shoulder to cry on during bad times and are willing participants in your joys as well. By confiding about your problems, you will finally be to open the doors to the outside world by combating shyness.

Family is a great place to practice your conversation skills. Staging mock conversations with family will enable you to gain confidence and control your shyness.

Gain support

The first thing you need to do is to enlist help and support from your family. Your family may have to make many necessary changes and adjustments in their daily schedule to help you with your plan. Giving them a fair idea about this, ensures full cooperation and support. You should also appreciate their efforts and take their suggestions and advice sportingly.

Getting started

After ensuring support from your family members your work will be made easier. You now need to decide the days on which you can conduct such mock conversations. This enables everybody involved to adjust their routines accordingly. You also need to decide the different places where you can stage such conversations. In the beginning, you can start with your home and as you gain confidence you can venture out in the garden where your neighbours can pry over the fence. You can make a list of all situations, which you find intimidating. You can then stage a scene where your family members each have a role to perform. For example if you afraid of initiating conversation with a shopkeeper, your father can become the ideal shopkeeper. You can start with the least anxious situation and practice it frequently.

When you are confident you can meet the real situation outside. If you are successful you can move on the next situation. Mostly situations like interviews and presentations top the list. During mock conversations you can practice some forms of therapy like relaxation, imagery. in order to make the situation feel as realistic as possible. You can also construct one situation in different ways and forms. Try and keep room for errors. Also gain feedback from your family through discussion at the end of each mock conversation. Mock conversation will not only give you necessary confidence, but also a support group that will cheer for your from the sidelines as you confront your shyness.

We all know that the best way of beating shyness is by inculcating confidence. By coxing yourself towards confidence you will be able to overcome shyness effectively.

Getting started

Given the high demands of the 21st century, self-confidence is very necessary to keep pace and sort out problems. Confidence enables one to approach new situations and complete new tasks efficiently. For building confidence all you need is determination, a goal and loads of patience.

Inculcating confidence

The first thing you need to do is to set a target. The target needs to be unique to yourself and care should be taken not to overestimate or underestimate your potentials. Overestimation can lead to disappointments and lead to major setbacks. However, underestimation will lead to lack of motivation. After setting an appropriate target like initiating conversation with the neighbor next door, you need to break your target in sub goals. After reaching each sub goal, you can reward yourself. This increases confidence and your determination to succeed will strengthen even more. You can enlist the support of your family and friends, who will provide you with emotional support in case of setbacks and increase your joy when you succeed.

Joining classes aimed at building self-confidence is another excellent option. Reading inspirational books and journals will also help you to maintain your confidence indirectly. However, Don't lose your sleep over minor setbacks. They are to be expected from time to time. Maintaining focus is therefore necessary. You should also concentrate on one aspect of your goal at a time, as dealing with many targets and expectations can be exhausting and mentally draining.

Shyness is the result of many factors, though; no factor is as potent as lack of self-esteem. To combat shyness, development of self-esteem is necessary.

Shyness and self-esteem

Shyness results out of fear of getting evaluated. An individual who is not confident about his abilities and potentials therefore searches new escape routes. People high on self esteem seldom face such a problem. The best way of dealing with shyness is by increasing one's self-esteem.

Tips on boosting self-esteem

You need to accept and appreciate yourself for who you are. Avoid comparing yourself to others at all costs. Instead focus on all your positive attributes. The feeling of being useless is a dangerous thought and should be discarded quickly. Instead, search within yourself for traces of hidden or unacknowledged potentials. Another common mistake is that of belittling yourself under the guise of modesty. Do not reject compliments by attributing them to other sources. Accept them graciously. This will boost your self-esteem and will protect you from feeling inferior or useless. Many a times shyness results out of feeling of inferiority that creates false impressions and pessimistic outlook towards oneself.

Negative self talk in face of any situation is likely to reinforce your poor opinion about yourself, thus scarring social relationship with others. Substituting positive self talk will do a great deal to mentally prepare yourself for certain events that you must have dreaded in the past. Feelings of guilt also do a great deal to shatter your self-esteem. You should therefore guard against guilt by removing all sorts of biases about yourself. Prove yourself wrong about your inabilities by engaging in certain activities you like. You can go swimming or for any other activity you like. This will enable you to form new acquaintances and meet new people. To gain maximum support for increasing your self-esteem, you can enlist the help of your friends and family who can do a great deal to nudge you in the right direction. Despite all this, if you still feel down in the dumps, then it is time to seek professional help.

During social interactions, you constantly face many unexpected situations and challenging people. You need to be open and receptive to all these experiences if you want to establish and enjoy social interactions.

The connection

Shy people constantly dread the thought of facing situations, which literally come out of the blue. They lack mental preparation and making adjustments is especially difficult. This also disturbs routine and you may find it difficult to get back to normalcy. By opening up to experiences, you can cope with all unexpected situations gracefully.

Opening up

Many of us have ideas about ' normal' and ' abnormal', anything outside it constitutes the unusual. Shy people limit themselves within certain experiences and boundaries. You need to reset these boundaries if you want to open up to new experiences. You should learn and respect everyone's views and opinions no matter how much they deviate from yours. Biases and stereotypes about others make us more judgmental. This not only creates barriers in communication but also prevents us from fully appreciating interactions with people. For example many fear talking to the members of the opposite sex.

Many shy people require a lot more time to warm up to new situations. There is no harm in taking your own time as long as you face it with a positive outlook. Positive thoughts matter a lot to open up to new situations. Rather than looking upon certain experiences as problems, you can change your mindset and talk about them as challenges. By changing your underling though process you can open up to new experiences. You also need to be a bit more adventurous while dealing with the outside world. Look upon any new situation as an adventure, you will find yourself willingly opening up to new situations. For example, traveling in a crowded train can be an adventure. Be open to both appreciation and criticism. This will prepare you for meeting the next challenge. By opening up to new experiences, you can add spice to your life. Perhaps, this is all you need to overcome shyness.

The truth about shyness

Many people are in denial about shyness. The fear of being ridiculed and teased also prevents many people from discussing this issue with other people. This however leads to many misconceptions. It is easier to hide your problem but not the symptoms. Symptoms of shyness like the inability to talk and respond, lead others to believe that you are arrogant or proud. Being open about shyness and your experiences will prevent this from happening.

How to accept reality

Shyness should not be viewed as a mental disease or disability. It is simply a challenging aspect of your personality. Being open about shyness will enable you to escape from unnecessary anxiety and tension. There are several ways in which you can accept your shyness. Some do it directly by formally collecting loved ones and coming clean. It can also be done indirectly through subtle hints and signs. Sometimes, this issue unexpectedly comes out in the open during office presentations or while making formal speeches. Shyness can also be exhibited through body language. Accepting shyness accidentally or under pressure leads to stress, anxiety and embarrassment.

It is quiet likely that you will repent such events later on. Sometimes you can withdraw even further. The best time to come out in the open is when you are cool, calm and composed. This enables you to present yourself effectively and do justice to your situation. However, being open about shyness is not always a serious issue. You can joke about your problem or explain it with humour. It takes the edge of your tension and makes others feel comfortable. Avoid criticizing yourself as this can lead to formation of negative thoughts. You should also avoid showing and feeling self-pity as this can seriously damage your personality. Being open about your shyness, will enable you to take your own place in society proudly, and will help you to combat shyness effectively.
