Right, wrong, or indifferent, the truth of the matter clearly indicates that soccer moms fulfill one of society’s most important and time-consuming tasks: ensuring that your young one and his team mates make it to their soccer games on time, in style, and well-fed. Being a bit of a mother hen, the typical soccer mom will be the nurturer of the carpool, the time keeper for the practice rounds, the snack volunteer, scrape bandager, and communications hub for other parents, babysitters, siblings, and so forth.

Soccer lore has it that the term first saw the light of day when a city council, hopeful in the mile high city of Denver, supplied her with a soccer mom credential for becoming a council member. Yet at times soccer moms find themselves on the receiving end of criticism, first and foremost for a propensity to over-scheduling their children (and themselves) and for sacrificing valuable opportunities for their children to simply enjoy the friendships they are building.

While a lot of the criticism against soccer moms is simply the result of nonsensical stereotyping, at times it may appear that a kernel of truth can be found in these statements. Many a time a soccer mom’s schedule is more demanding than a politician’s reelection campaign, and adding to this the pressures and time commitments of family, career, and personal hobbies, it is clearly evident that soccer moms are in desperate need of excellent time management skills. For those who may not have quite attained the highest levels of this art, there is hope! Follow these five easy steps for kicking your time management skills, and you will not only meet all your deadlines, but will also enjoy doing so.

Step one is common sense, but it cannot be underestimated: know your objective. Let’s face it, driving a car full of kids to a soccer game in and of itself sounds incredibly easy, but if one of these kids’ moms suddenly cannot come to pick up the child? What if someone gets injured? What about little Sue’s sister’s ballet lesson that is only a five-minute drive from the soccer field? What is your objective? It is easy to fall into the trap of alleged teamwork, with your being the only one working. If you are willing to take a van full of children to the game, but will not be able or willing to supervise them after the initial drop off, please be sure to communicate this clearly. The children’s parents need to understand that you will be glad to get them to the game, but getting them home, or getting their siblings to ballet lessons, is out of the scope of your objective.

This note ties in with step number two: learn to say “no” and mean it. Once you know your objective and have built your schedule around it, avoid exceptions. These exceptions are sometimes unavoidable, such as an injury on the soccer field, but oftentimes are simply the result of the poor planning of others. Remember that your job is not to rescue another parent every time they have over-scheduled themselves, but instead your job is to see to it that you and your children will enjoy the time you have at soccer, learn the game, interact with friends, and do so without the stress and panic that goes hand in hand with poor planning. So if another parent asks you to take little Sue’s sister to ballet practice, and if this will upset your whole schedule, since it might require you to pull your son out of practice early, politely but firmly say “no.”

Steps three and four go hand in hand: begin each month with a to-do list that covers that particular month only, and then allocate sufficient time to the tasks. For example, does a particular month host the biggest game of the season? If so, you will want to adjust your time schedule to permit for extra practice sessions, awards banquets, and trips to the trophy shop. This may mean that your child’s other activities may need to be rescheduled or alternate rides may need to be secured to assure that everyone’s needs are met. Do not spread yourself so thin that an awards banquet leaves you in a lousy, stressed out mood!

And last, but not least, step number five: have fun and enjoy the process rather than the result!

Most of us live in a time where there are a million things to get done in one day, and not enough time to do it. However, by scheduling things and handling time properly, scheduling commitments can eventually become easier to handle. In order to learn how to schedule, there are certain tips and rules that can be used in order to become more efficient. Following are some guidelines that can be used when scheduling that will help to get things done.

1. Specify your goals. Know what has to be done and the time limits that you have to get these specific things done. By knowing not only what has to get done for the day, but also on a longer term, you will be able to prioritize your time as well as your commitments. While setting your goals, make sure that you give a certain amount of time to how long each goal will take to reach. This will also help you to form a schedule. After you start setting your goals, it is always good to keep track of what you get done and what you don’t complete. Make mental notes on how long it takes you to get something done. Over time, this will allow your scheduling commitments to become easier to handle.

2. Track your activities and time schedule. Through technology, or even through the use of a pen and paper, you can record your daily activities, how long it took you to do each activity and whether it was effective or not. There are several different ways to do this, including a day timer or calendar, software programs, a handheld computer device, or even just a pen and paper.

3. Plan ahead. If you know that you will have appointments or other things that need to get done at a certain time, make sure to leave room in your calendar for them and don’t plan other things around them. It is always important to leave plenty of room and time for things, as well as to stay ahead of your schedule with things that you may need. Some will buy food in advance as a tool to make sure that there will be plenty of time to do other things.

4. Plan things for the best time of day. Everyone has a natural rhythm and time of the day where their body works the best. It is best to plan out the most demanding jobs and plans for this time of day. This will allow you time to rest when you need, as well as time to effectively carry out with the day’s tasks during your peak hours. By not working against yourself with your schedules and plans, you will be able to get more things done and allow more room and time for the important things in your life.

5. Focus on what matters. This means prioritizing and setting up what is most important to get done. If these are done at your peak times of day, you will automatically become more efficient with your work day. By working smarter and not harder, your scheduling will also become easier for you to handle.

6. Move past your internal barriers. Things such as procrastination or negativity towards your time management and scheduling may cause a lack of enthusiasm to get the smaller things done during the day. This can happen if you don’t have clear goals that are set, have not seen the vision of the tasks at hand and what they will take to finish, and don’t feel like the tasks are important. The important skill to learn with this is to develop your own motivational tools and skills. This may be finding ways to keep on task, or it may be finding ways to motivate your self and take time to re-find focus. If you are in need of outside help for these internal problems, there are software programs that can help you to find the lack in motivation that you may have.

For some, scheduling commitments are often burdensome and can be hard to organize in one day. However, by understanding the different parts of scheduling, and using tools to help you to reach your goals and to organize your time, scheduling and commitments will eventually become an easy task to handle.

Over-committing Yourself

Saying no can often be a very difficult thing to do. No can be a very scary word. It can cause an extensive amount of anger, damage to relationships, and an overwhelming feeling of guilt. No, though, is often a very important word. It can help keep you from over-committing yourself, which can cause stress. Stress only leads to poor mental health which can lead to all sorts of unpleasant things. Avoid over-commitment by using these five strategies to say no.

One of the best ways to say no is to focus on your goals at hand. Ensuring that you have enough time for your goals and your family is essential to saying no. Convince yourself that your goals are just as important as the task you are being asked to do, then simply say no. You will understand that your tasks require your focus, and the other task is utterly unimportant. It is okay to be selfish sometimes. Finding time to meet your personal goals is essential to good mental health. Your personal time for your goals is like any other task on your calendar, and taking time to complete that task is always a good idea. It may even help to block that time out on your calendar as a visual reminder that your personal goals are just as important as anything else on the schedule.

Another good way to say no and avoid over-commitment is to tediously examine your calendar when you are asked to take on another project. You need to be aware when you have reached your schedule filling point. If you have too much on the calendar, be honest about it. It is important to let people know that you have accepted several other responsibilities, and you are at the point where you can take on no more. If you choose this method, though, be sure that you understand that no one will fault you for already having too many things to do. It is not necessary to make excuses if you do not have any free time. It is not as if you are saying you can never help with projects that person has to offer again, you are simply refusing to help at this point in time. Most people never develop an understanding of their self limits.

You can also avoid over-commitment by only taking on projects that you are comfortable with. Having tasks to complete that you feel uncomfortable doing, or that you feel unqualified to do, only causes stress. There are a number of reasons you might feel uncomfortable with a project including the people who are involved in the project, the type of work that might be involved, any sticky moral situations that might occur, or the time it will take to complete the project. You may also feel unqualified to complete the task for any number of reasons including the fact that you do not have the skills necessary, you do not have the experience necessary, or the project simply seems to overwhelming for you to undertake. If you feel like you will not be able to deliver quality work for any reason, by all means, say no. Your comfort level in completing tasks is paramount to what someone else wants you to do.

Avoiding over-commitment by saying no doesn’t have to mean that you are done with even discussing the project. You can recommend someone who might be better to undertake the task. You meet many people in the course of a lifetime who may be able to offer the same skills and work ethic to the project you are being asked to undertake. If that is the case, be sure to tell the person you are refusing about the other individual. This will not only help to ease the rejection you are about to offer them, it may also help ease their minds because they will be able to find someone to help out.

One final way to avoid over-commitment by saying no is only saying no for the time at hand. You may really want to help with the project, but you know you simply do not have the time to offer at the moment. As a result, you can offer your services at some other time or date in the future. This keeps you from filling your schedule, but does not mean you cannot be involved with the project. If the person cannot wait for your help, never fear. They will find someone else who can help with the project.

Over-commitment can cause real problems in your life. Learn to say no.

For any activity or task to be done and completed successfully, one must be able to carefully manage time at the onset, in order to prepare for, or even avoid, glitches along the way. For any project, therefore, time management is very important. A project may seem smooth sailing at the beginning, but anything can happen midway and cause a panic if its proponents are unable to cope with the sudden changes.

What does proper project time management entail? It means creating a sound and stable schedule of activities and tasks that would lead to the achievement of a particular goal. Having a schedule ensures that your project gets done via the right steps. It also ensures that a project is finished at its designated time.

If something wrong happens along the way, the schedule can shift a little. But a sturdy one, one that you have committed to from the very start, will adjust to the glitches smoothly.

How does proper project time management help you?

1. It boosts productivity.

By raising your output levels and productivity, you will have more time left to do more things with less effort. Keep in mind the Pareto principle: There are things that may be done with only 20% of effort, but can generate value worth 80%. Conversely, there are activities that require 80% of your energies to extract only 20% of value. This principle suggests that people always seek the former.

2. It helps decrease, or even eliminate, wasted time.

One of the biggest time wasting factors is poor planning. Project time management helps you pick out which activities are truly important, in order to avoid having to procrastinate, engage in useless meetings and arguments and other unnecessary interruptions and distractions. Also project time management is what will force you to assign a specific amount of time to perform a certain job. This way, you make sure that all your working elements are in order.

3. It helps you build up your performance levels.

How you perform is directly related to how much interest and energy you have for a certain task. Proper time management helps you achieve the level of concentration, motivation and focus to combat possible stressors along the way.

4. It helps you maintain fulfillment and balance.

Your long-term goals will be accomplished in a more balanced way through proper project time management. It helps keep your sanity grounded and your feet on the ground. It also helps keep your relationships sound and steady, without having to compromise the quality of your work. They say that work and play don’t usually mesh well. However, with the right project time management plan, you will be able to enjoy both without much problem.

Project time management makes sure that your energies and time are focused on the things that really matter to you. By doing so, you are able to boost the value of your results. And since doing everything that runs in your head is simply an impossibility, you will need to choose which activity you’re going to pull through and how your time will be spent on it. Good luck!

Procrastination is a very common occurrence in the lives of many different people. Many procrastinators may not even be able to tell you why they put things off so often. By definition, procrastination is something that is put off needlessly. You are not likely procrastinating if you haven’t done something just because you have had other things to do. However, if you are putting off your task and trying to find other things to do instead, you are likely procrastinating. This behavior can be destructive and is not very healthy. Therefore, if you are aware of your procrastinating behavior, you should work on eliminating it forever.

There are many reasons not to procrastinate. One of the most important reasons not to put things off is because by putting things off until the last possible minute, you are causing yourself more total stress. You may think that you are saving yourself stress by avoiding the situation, however when it comes down to those last few moments when you have no other choice but to complete the task, you are likely to be under heavy stress. The more time you have to accomplish something, the less stressed you should feel about doing it. If you do a little bit of it each day, then you will likely find you have finished before your due date.

If you are putting off writing a research paper or doing a work related project, you probably have strict due dates involved. Other tasks, like cleaning out your closet, may not have a due date that will be enforced by anyone other than yourself. People tend to procrastinate when it comes to these tasks. If there is no one who will hold you accountable for not doing the task, it is likely you will leave it undone for long periods of time. Try setting a schedule for yourself with these tasks. Actually write down your schedule on a chart so you will be reminded of your responsibilities. If you have to clean your entire house, designate one room for each day of the week. Therefore, you will get your home clean, but won’t waste a complete weekend doing it.

A second reason not to procrastinate is because procrastination will leave you unproductive on other tasks. If you always have that one task you have been putting off in the back of your mind, then you will not be able to completely focus on other tasks you may be doing. Go ahead and get the main task done before moving on to something else. This will give your mind the freedom to concentrate on tasks that will follow. It is very difficult to focus on reading a book when the thought of your upcoming term paper is lingering in your mind.

A great way to help yourself prioritize is to make a good old fashioned list of things you need to accomplish and their dates. After listing everything, grab a clean sheet of paper and organize your tasks by importance and date. Put things that weigh heavy on your mind near the top of your list so you can get them out of the way. Set yourself free and do the most important task on your “To-Do List”. Making a list can really motivate you to get things done.

A third reason you should steer clear of procrastination is because it can lead to sloppy work. If you wait until the last minute to tackle a task, it is probably not going to be your best work. This may not be important if your task is to clean your room. However, if the task involves an important work or school project, it could mean much more. It is best to always show your best work when working on a task. The only way you can show your best work is by allowing yourself plenty of time to do the task. This means you will not leave the task undone until the last minute.

If you have a problem with procrastination, then consider making three little signs labeled with these reasons you should not put things off and leave them in your workspace. They will help you remember that your behavior of the past is not productive and only causes more problems in the long run. The sooner you get things done, the better you will feel about everything!

The ins and outs of time management are really quite simple: we all have 24 hours per day, seven days per week, and about 365 days per year. Into this time we all must cram our projects, schedules, activities, and other important events. Yet don’t you wonder why some folks seem to be able to do so much and still have time left over to enjoy some free time and “smell the roses?” How do they do it? Easy! They plan for the fun time and actually make it a part of their effective time management.

Planning fun tine is crucial, since it does not “just” happen. We plan for the commute in the morning, we schedule the meeting at noon, and we schedule our lunch break, yet we do not schedule any time for snuggling on the sofa with our little princess, or reading a book to junior. Why is that? The short answer clearly is that “fun” time is supposed to happen spontaneously, and sometimes this may be the case. Yet, unless some time is allotted for it to happen, it is unlikely that it will become a constant part of our daily lives.

What exactly constitutes “fun” time? Some would refer to it as a time of relaxation, leisure, or recreation. Others see it as a time to step away from the responsibilities of life and instead allow for some personal time that only benefits themselves. Still others count hobbies or athletics as “fun” time. Who is correct? All are! “Fun” time is a time of stress reduction, and everyone experiences this differently. Some find it in the artist’s studio with a block of clay on a wheel, while others find it on a racquet ball court. Some will see it in a good book, and still others will find it in the midst of a volunteer activity. No matter what your source of “fun” time is, unless you schedule it, it will not happen.

Effective time management relies on the proper use of allotted time for many an activity, but it does not discriminate against what you choose to use the time allotments for. Hence, it is up to you to determine what will fill your day, and if you neglect the “fun” aspect, you will soon find yourself in an overwhelmed, “burned out” and most likely unproductive state that will not allow you to even finish the scheduled tasks on time. Just how important is “fun” time to effective time management?

First, most of us have some activity or hobby we enjoy. By incorporating this into your schedules, you are forced to think about and plan on spending your time wisely. Organizing your day with “fun” time in mind will also allow the other things from your daily “to do” list to find their spots on the calendar.

Secondly, by incorporating “fun” into a daily schedule, we are forced to set goals and prioritize our activities to accommodate our “fun” time. A goal should be realistic and measurable. For example, adding “make a million dollars and become famous racecar driver” if you barely clear $50,000 a year and still drive an old Hugo might not be realistic, and will lead to frustration. “Learn karate and increase earnings to $55,000″ is much more realistic and will allow you to really work toward an achievable goal that will stretch you just enough to allow you to reach higher. Obviously, adding the “fun” time to the schedule adds a touch of reality to the whole endeavor.

Third, be kind to yourself and reward yourself. By allowing you to reap the fruits of your hard labor and seeing the rewards the many nights of working late have brought you, you will be refreshed and ready to go for the next challenge. You may even wish to go so far as to promise yourself a reward if you get the next raise, are sent to the next seminar, make the quota, or simply get the next contract. This system of achievement and reward will add a system of checks and balances that will help you to live happier, healthier, and stay productive much longer than others.

Proper time management and planning does not really require the knowledge of rocket science. For most people, a simple list of things to do and a priority ranking will already work beautifully and effectively. In fact, just keeping an organized planner will often do the trick and help achieve impressive results.

However, there are those people who are too busy to write down their schedules and fumble with a paper-based planner and a number of post-its that they often find themselves looking for a way to make things a whole lot easier. Given the kind of work environment we have now, where everything is so fast-paced and output oriented, most people would opt to work with something that is more electronically-based and easier to operate and manage.

It is probably for this reason, however, that some of the more enterprising creators and developers among us built time management software. These software are perfect for those whose lives revolve around technological products and gadgets and hate having to write things down. They provide ease of use and portability, because, well, time management software can easily fit in a mini-PDA, thus, eliminating the need for big bulky bags to carry big and bulky files and planners.

Here are some examples of time management software that people have found helpful in planning activities and schedules more efficiently.

- ClipMate

You can download ClipMate from the Internet to help enhance the native clipboard function in your Windows operating system. ClipMate is perfect for the handling, pasting and cutting of various items at the same time. The regular Windows clipboard can only handle one task at one time. ClipMate makes the movement of larger volumes possible.

- Achieve Planner

Achieve Planner is a time management and goal setting software that aims at boosting your productivity at the shortest time possible. With this software, you will be able to work more efficiently and better organize your time. This may also be downloaded from the Internet.

- Sequence Dream Editor

Its name does not sound much like a professional planner but a quick scan of its features will tell you otherwise. As a time management and planning software, Sequence Dream Editor has the ability to draft sequence diagrams relatively faster after you input all the items necessary. It eliminates the need of having to think up a flowchart, which takes a considerable amount of time.

There are a lot of other time management software available for free and for sale out there, each specializing in a particular perk. There are software that contain too many clickables that some of the first-time users find rather annoying, but there are also some that are designed for those who want to get things done with just a few basic clicks. Different time management software are available for different kinds of people and professions. Choose one that that best fits your need and your processor.

When you ask people what they would like to change most about the things they have done in the past, a lot of them will tell you something that is related to time. Most would want to go back to alter some of their old decisions, while some would say they would give almost anything to have more time to spend on a certain activity or with another person or family member. Indeed, time is one of the life factors most coveted by human beings.

Unfortunately, time is not something we can control, nor can we try to steer it into a direction we want. Time simply run and runs continuously, and it is up to us to make sure that we cope with it smoothly, because, well, it will not make adjustments for us, no matter how grave our circumstances are.

Sure, we’ve seen on television and movies how some characters were able to alter how time flies, even having the ability to freeze it. However, this remains a fantasy. All we can do with time is to chase after it. And if we are averse with chases, then manage it in such a way that it is giving us its favor.

There are many forms of time management and planning strategies.

Post-its on refrigerator doors and highlighted reminders on bulky filofaxes have worked for most of us, students and professionals alike. Some of the more technologically and gadget-inclined have turned to personal digital assistants and cellphone-based alarms and reminders to get them going. Other have opted to download software not just to help them arrange their schedules, but also to help them assess their activities’ degrees of importance.

There are those of us who take a more social route to time management and planning and enrol themselves in time management programs and seminars, not just to be able to learn new techniques and how to execute them, but to share the experience with people with like interests and goals. Because man is a social animal, as Aristotle said, a lot of us find greater comfort in heading the journey off with people who share our views.

However which way we attempt to tackle the issue of time management and planning, and whatever forms it may take, one thing is common to them all: the recognition and acknowledgement that time is precious and that we should seeks every means and way to maximize it, no matter how short.

These time management and planning forms, however, while very helpful, are merely tools to help us achieve a certain goal. They do not, in any way, guarantee, that we will always be successful, because, as with anything else in this world, success is dependent on how we act upon it. Yes, no matter how many strategies and time management forms we employ, none of our tactics would amount to anything without our intervention.

If we truly want to succeed in making the most of our limited time in this world, then we must act immediately. Time management and planning forms are there only to aid us and make things easier for us along the way. It is us that will make things happen. Without our will and perseverance, all our planning will end in vain.

You know the scenario,it’s Monday morning, you know the taxes are due this afternoon, sometime this month you have that big presentation at work, junior has a soccer playoff game, and parent-teacher conferences are just around the corner. Suddenly it hits you that you have committed to babysitting this evening, and all this before 7:00AM! Sure, all of this could have been avoided, if you had planned ahead, but you couldn’t find the time to sit down with your day planner, calendar, and all the other papers you got inundated with from school, soccer club, etc. But did this really save you any time? No! The 20 minutes of planning you neglected could be the key to maximizing your time, so enough will be left over for some fun, and none will be wasted on worrying. Planning ahead will allow you to stay ahead! You will save a lot of time, money, aggravation, and worry by simply learning how to plan and then following up on those plans.

Planning ahead maximizes your time by getting your day off to a good start.

You will remember this from your school days, but mom had a point when she laid out your clothes for the next day the night before. Pack you bag, have your lunch ready to go and bagged, the bus money in your pocket, and your clothes cleaned, ironed, and ready to go the night before. This will ensure that you will start your day off right, and gain a positive momentum that may take you through some rough spots throughout the day. Avoided are the last minute scrambles for the matching socks, presentation cover, or lunch. You will leave the house on time, or perhaps even early, allowing you to make good use of your time.

Planning ahead maximizes your time by having all you need at your finger tips.

Remember the last time you tried to sew on one button, but couldn’t find the button, needle or thread, ended up not fixing your one pair of “official” looking pants, and then needed to scramble the day of your big presentation? A little planning ahead will allow you to focus your time and energy on the presentation ahead, and not on the peripherals that have only a secondary effect. To this end, have a “grooming kit” assembled and part of your closet. It should contain buttons, needles, thread, scissors, and also some shoe cream and polishing cloths. This may seem like a small step, but by planning ahead for your wardrobe needs, you will be able to maximize your preparation time.

Planning ahead maximizes your time by allotting appropriate time increments to your activities.

Do you have a schedule? Most of us do, but is this schedule of your own making or is it based on someone else’s idea of how long an activity should take? For example, breakfast for some is a big affair that may take well over 30 minutes, while for others it is a quick yogurt over the sink, all in all taking two minutes tops (if you count the time it took to get it out of the refrigerator). Time yourself, as silly as this may appear, and learn about your habits. Find out how much time you really need for breakfast, lunch and dinner. How much time does the commute to work really take? Once you find out the actual time you need to budget, enter them into your day planner as a constant. The same should be true for sleeping time — yes, sleep time must be scheduled as well. Entering these constants will allow you to plan your activities around them, maximizing the time you have.

Planning ahead maximizes your time by being realistic about your exploits.

This may sound simple, but as anyone who has ever kept a log of “billable hours” at work will be able to tell you, we do less with our time than we really think. A lot of time is “wasted” with pencil sharpening, walking around, searching for things, talking on the phone, and dealing with non-essential things. Understanding your actual time requirements will permit you to adequately schedule yourself without spreading yourself too thin.

Whether you are a stay-at-home-mother or a corporate worker, you will likely have your share of meetings this year. A mother may need to organize meetings for the local church food drive or for the school PTA, while a corporate worker may be planning meetings with important clients. The point is that no matter who you are, you should always know how to organize a great meeting. The first step, after scheduling a time, date, and location, in organizing a meeting is planning the agenda. Agenda planning is a step that you simply cannot skip when it comes to a successful meeting. If you are unsure how to plan an agenda, use these steps to get you started.

Style

The general style for an agenda is an outline form. This will allow you to document the main issues with just a few words. For example, if you are planning to discuss the pizza fundraiser, you would only need to add “Pizza Fundraiser” to the agenda. There would be no need to go into any further detail about the fundraiser. Those who attend the meeting will be able to hear the details directly from you or the speaker and will be able to take their own notes. Being concise will help you create your agenda in very little time. This is the standard format, so don’t be afraid you are being too vague.

Information

Choosing what information should go onto the agenda can be tricky. If the meeting is a recurring event, then you probably want to begin by adding a section devoted to recapping what happened at the last meeting. For instance, if your meeting occurs every month, write a “Last Month’s Recap” section and spend just a few moments going over what was accomplished. Then you can proceed to current sections. Add each main point that you plan on discussing. If there are formal activities that must be done, such as voting on issues, be sure to add that as a bullet on your agenda. Adding the names and introductions of guest speakers is great as well. This will allow everyone to get the proper spelling of the guest’s name. When you are adding information to the agenda, keep in mind your meeting’s time frame. Do not add a bundle of information that you will not likely get around to discussing. If you are heading the meeting, do not be afraid to say “We must move on from this issue right now”, if you are going over on one issue.

Closing

Adding a small closing to the agenda is the perfect way to end your memo. You can add a little section with notes about what will be discussed at the next meeting. Adding the date, time, and location of upcoming events is also a great idea. You can also add a little “thank you” section to those who participated or headed certain tasks throughout the month. If you are having a corporate meeting, you can also add goals or deadlines that everyone should be aware of. It is up to you on what to add to the closing section.

Contact Information

It is important for you to include any important contact information the members of the meeting might need on the agenda. Many times the agenda is something that members of the meeting will keep and utilize in the future. Therefore, any important contact information of clients, directors, and other members should be included somewhere on the agenda. This is a great organizational tip and will help avoid questions later regarding this information.

If you are in charge of an upcoming meeting, you should not avoid planning an agenda. An agenda will help you stay on track, especially if you are nervous about the meeting. It will also give the members of the meeting a chance to stay focused on the information being presented. They will have an outline to add notes to and something to refer back to after the meeting is over. If you want to hold a professional meeting, you must never do so without an agenda. So go ahead and create one. It only takes a few moments and will help you greatly.

The quest for more time is probably one of the most common activities among all persons in this world. As humans whose mortalities often dictate how we choose to live our lives, we seek ways and means to extend whatever little time is afforded to us and make sure that when we get it, we try to extract the greatest benefit and value we possibly can.

Each of us has his or her purpose in this world, and, more often than not, the only way to achieve this purpose is to better manage our personal time.

So how does personal time management planning happen? It really does not take rocket science to figure this out. Personal time management planning means setting aside the mundane and unnecessary activities, weeding them out one by one, and focusing our energies and efforts into tasks that help us achieve what are truly important.

Now, determining what is important depends on how we have lived our lives so far. What is important for one may be considered puny and uninteresting by another. So, there really should be no argument about what it is. For some people, family is what is important. For others, it’s career.

Whatever it is, personal time management planning should seek to gain more time to do things that are on the top of our priority lists, regardless of what they are and if they are acceptable for other people.

The best way we can manage our personal time is by making a list of things you want to do and achieve in your lifetime. This list may be written down, if you find that more effective, or you can just keep it inside your head. Among these items, choose which are fit for the short-term and which are long-term.

It would be nice if your short-term goals also lead to the accomplishment of your long-term goals, because it means you have a very consistent life plan. However, having otherwise does not really mean you are inconsistent. It simply entails that you have a lot of plans.

Realize that our time in this world is limited. Your goals may change along the way, but, for the meantime, try to stick to the ones you have. Changes are unpredictable, so you must not try to reach for a goal thinking that it will eventually change. This is a negative and confusing way to live life. Keep things in order and deal with the shifts later. After all, once you already have a set list of goals in place, any future changes will be easier to deal with, than if you’ve never had any plan at all.

Time wasted is one of the greatest stressors of our lives. Thus, in order for us to be fit and well-equipped to face challenges, we must be able to manage our time effectively. Everything revolves around the availability, or inavailability, of time. Time runs whether or not we can cope with it. It goes on regardless of our ability to handle it. Thus, it is our duty and responsibility to make sure that we are within its wavelength. Otherwise, we get left behind and end up more frustrated than ever.

Life, as some say, is the constant chase for time. Indeed, it is so. Time is the most valuable thing we can ever have in this world and not even the richest among us can control it. It is a great balancing factor, knowing no age, gender, religion, ethnicity, social and political background. It does not even care about our individual problems.

Therefore, in order for us to effectively manage our personal time, we must learn to be resilient, look it in the eye, tell it that we can handle it. There are many ways to manage time, as books and articles would suggest, but it is really up to us to make things happen. Yes, time is on our hands.

When people fail to write things down, some serious consequences can occur. People lose productivity time, they waste funds, and they create stress for themselves and all of those in the environment around them. Most people fail to write things down because they believe they will be able to remember all of the important things they must during the course of the day. This, however, is a false idea. We find it difficult to remember all of the things we must because we are so busy. Generally, the phone rings, three people stop by your office, and you’re trying to handle six tasks at once. We try to move from task to task. New thoughts pop into our minds all of the time. We are incessantly interrupted before we can complete a task. When we do write things down, we do this on small scraps of paper that will eventually become lost. Writing things down in the correct manner can put an end to all of this insanity.

In order to begin writing things down, you must develop and organized system of record keeping that works for you. A telephone log is a good place to start. You can buy a pre-made telephone log, or you can make your own. Be sure the log you choose has space to write down the name, business affiliation, and phone number of the person calling. Then be sure it has plenty of space to record both the nature of the call and the action required on your part. Additional information you can include in the log might be things like who made the call (you or the other party), the duration of the call, the date of the call, and the time of day. This might help you to determine several things when you are analyzing your phone time like how often you talk to certain people, the time of day you are most likely to be on the telephone, and any excess time you are spending on the phone. Store the log by the phone you use most frequently for business. Every time the phone rings, grab a pencil and start writing. Use this log for both incoming and outgoing calls to make your telephone time even more productive. Even if the phone will not stop ringing, you won’t forget the things you need to do or remember as a result of the call because they will be written down. A quick read through of the phone log a few times a day will help refresh your memory as to tasks left unfinished. Moreover, you will not forget what you have told clients during previous phone conversations, which can be a bit of an embarrassment at the time.

This same procedure can also be followed in the form of a visitor’s log. It will help keep your from forgetting what you tell people who drop by your office on a regular basis. If you are speaking to them, and their last visits come up in the course of speaking, you can simply flip to your log and refresh your memory. It can also cut down on your failure to listen. It can be very hard not to listen to a visitor when you are writing down what your visitor is trying to say to you. It might also impress your visitor that you are being so thorough based on his or her visit.

In addition to your telephone and visitor’s log, it can be very helpful to keep a small notebook with you at all times. This might help you to record thoughts or ideas that pop into your mind through the normal course of a day. You can simply buy a small notebook or you can purchase a day planner. These typically have a section for writing things like this down.

Whether you make the logs yourself or purchase them, writing things down to this degree takes persistence. You may find that you often forget to write things down. Take it one week at a time. Do not force yourself to think any further into the future than you can. By the time you hit the second week, you will find that it has become second nature to grab your log and start writing.

Time is one of the most important things that are needed in order to accomplish things with your business and personal life. Because of this, organizing your time is one of the most important things that you can do to have a successful day, or one that seems like a failure. Remaining organized with what you do with your day will help you to achieve goals and to be able to do the things that you want and need with your career and family. Here are ten tips that can help you to organize your time.

1. Have time management tools. Whether this is technology software, a computer, or a pen and paper, knowing what your tasks are for the day and knowing the time frame in which you have to complete them always helps you to see what you have to do and how much time you will have to do it.

2. Know your priorities. It is best to put the things that are most important at the top of your list and allow yourself the right amount of time for getting these things done. At the end of the day, these accomplishments will help you in feeling like you’ve done a good job of managing your time. If certain things don’t get done, you want to make sure it’s the things that don’t have the tight deadline or matters that aren’t as important.

3. Have a routine. If you are able to stick to a certain time frame each day, it will help for you to stay organized and will become easier for you to manage time day by day. This will also help if something unexpected happens or if there is some sort of interruption to your day. You’ll know exactly what you need to do to get back on task for the rest of your day.

4. Stay organized. This means managing files on your computer as well as organizing either household or office times. This will help you to save time on things such as looking for items that you may need. By always knowing where you have everything, you will effectively save time.

5. Always have a plan. By always knowing what you need to do and outlining the time that you need to do it in, you will prevent any problems with not having enough time to complete a task. By setting goals and knowing how much time you need to accomplish these goals, you will be saving time through your daily routines.

6. Don’t waste time. A lot of times, procrastination and low motivation can get in the way of you accomplishing your goals at an internal level. Externally, interruptions such as friends and extended conversations may end up throwing you off schedule. It is best to stay focused and try not to let these different influences get in the way of what needs to be accomplished for the day.

7. Have extra time that you need personally. No matter what the tasks that you have at hand, always have time that you can use for yourself. There are times during the day that are good to stop and relax or have a meal. When you are planning out your day, make sure to plan time for your self, personal time or extra time that you can use away from the goals that you are trying to accomplish. This is a good way to refocus and find more energy for the rest of the day.

8. Track your time. There are several software management tools that you can use in order to successfully track how much time you are spending doing certain tasks. These, as well as making mental or other types of notes on how much time you are spending doing something will always help. There may be times where you are not spending enough time doing something, or where the goals that you have set are requiring more time than you estimated. You can then refocus your goals and tasks for the next day.

9. Use the right resources. Often times, time is wasted trying to find the right thing to use. It is best to stick to one type of system or process that works best for you. This will help with your routines and daily tasks. When spending too much time searching for something new, time is wasted when trying to accomplish your goal.

10. Ask for help when you need it. If there are a lot of goals that you have to accomplish and you are not seeing a way to get it all done on time, ask for help from someone. There are plenty around you that will support what you are trying to do and would be willing to help with certain tasks if you need it.

No matter what your goals, and what you are trying to accomplish from day to day, using the right resources and staying organized with what you have to do will help you to successfully implement the proper time management. By following simple guidelines, time management and having successful goal reaching from day to day will become easy and efficient.

Reaching a goal is easy to say, and in real life can be harder to do. That’s why staying motivated during the times that you just don’t feel like it, or when you don’t even want to try is so important. There are keys as to why you might not feel you’re at full potential. It could be you : a not very self confident you.

If you think you can just fake it and you’ll be successful, then think again. It won’t work. So what can you do?

Start by looking your self confidence issue square in the face and then change it! No one else can, and to be honest no one else cares as much as you should. Write down why you feel the way you do and make a list of the areas you would like to improve or change totally about yourself. Be honest and know what is really important to improve on, and what can be changed. Develop a plan for your spiritual life too. If you don’t have grounding in a spiritual or religious life, take the time to find one. It will change how you handle life, and any curve balls it throws at you. You only have one life to live, so live it to your fullest, and to the best of your capabilities. Without addressing your self confidence issue : no time management skills matter, but don’t be to hard on yourself change takes time, but begin today changing your future.

Here are 5 tips that you can use to stay motivated, and to achieve whatever goals that you’ve set out for yourself in your life.

Make a plan to stay motivated. Write it down. Look at the different ways that keep you motivated and write those down too. There are endless possibilities for motivation that you can use, and there will be new ones that you might discover along the way. Take some time to read some books from inspirational power leaders such as Tony Robbins, or use spirituality to inspire you and give you hope.

Take the time to write down every morning, or even the night before, short term lists for goals that you want to achieve that day or the next. By focusing on a few short term goals your long term ones will become closer and well defined. Take your long term goals and shorten them into easier to accomplish steps.

Walk from room to room and post some brightly colored post-it notes listing all of the positive things that will happen in your life by achieving your goals. Taking a look at the goals you will accomplish will inspire you to reach for the goal and not to give up.

Use time wisely by taking care of your body. Regular exercise and a healthy diet in conjunction with a steady sleep routine will keep you alert and focused on the goals ahead.

Reward yourself when you reach a milestone toward your goal. Do this by taking some time for you, in other words take the time to smell the roses. Soak a little longer in the tub, buy a new outfit, and take a day off to spend with a loved one, or just nap the afternoon away. Do whatever it takes to make you feel good about what reaching out for your goal.

As you go along with your plans always recognize that when the bad days hit, there will always be a tomorrow. However, if you notice that you just can’t get out of the unmotivated mood you’re in, then it could be signs of a physical problem that could be causing you experience depression. Imbalances in the body can really play havoc on your goals, and delay the time for you reaching your goals.

If you’re having problems with self motivation examine your self closely. Could it be that you’re in a mode of laziness because you just don’t want to get busy? We all have those times and there is nothing wrong with having a bad day, but if you’re in that mood constantly you might have a problem with self esteem. You’re the only one that can fix it, so get up and start again. Work on the problems of self doubt that are leading you down this wasteful path. Only you can fix it.

However, there could be other physical problems that you might need to get checked out with a health care professional. Problems that you might not be aware of such as diabetes, low thyroid, or a host of any other type of medical issues can get you bogged down. So if after a reasonable amount of time, and with due work on your part, things just aren’t changing, get checked out. It’s your health and life.

Okay, what can you do if you’re just feeling bummed out?

You need to get your life on track to reach a few goals that you’ve had in mind for a while, what can you do?

Here are a few tips that will set you back on track to get a little boost back into your goal setting routine, and motivate you to just keep at it!

Write your goals down and keep them where you can see it. Not stuck in a drawer out of site, but out in the open where you can view it each day. It’s like bills, if you don’t see it; it’s out of sight and out of mind. If it’s hidden in a drawer, you might as well have not written a thing because it won’t do one bit of good to help you reach a goal.

Start with small goals. Don’t try to accomplish the whole goal at one time. In fact you’ll need to take a look at your goal and break it down into parts. Write down your ideas about the specific short term goals and prioritize. Then take little steps towards your long term goal or goals.

Buy some post-it notes and prepare to post your goals. Place these strategically around your home or office. Along with your posted goals include the positives and negatives about not reaching your end result. It doesn’t have to be long, but short little reminders of the consequences. It’s a wake up call towards action.

Don’t just try to reach your goal once. When your goals are completed, start on new goals. Make it your routine to start on new goals regularly. You’ll find that once you accomplish your first goal, it will drive you to succeed in further goals, again and again.

Enlist the help of others, either to motivate you and inspire more action on your part, or just to be an encouraging friendly ear when you feel yourself grinding to a halt. If necessary find yourself a reliable life coach to help you when you’re feeling the task is just too much. Often though just a friend is all that’s necessary. You can even work together if you’re on the same type of path or goal.

There’s nothing like achieving a goal that you poured your heart and soul into. It’s exciting to reach it, and when you do take some time and savor the moment! It might be a wise idea to reward yourself before you have attained your final destination. For example, if you’re dieting, and you’re just about to eat the upholstery off the couch, count up the lbs you’ve lost, and eat a small piece of dieters chocolate cake!

Now, take a deep breath and realize that your back on your diet, and can begin counting those lbs again that you’re going to loose. Don’t become discouraged : you can achieve that final goal of buying a new dress, or even taking a night out on the town for some fun when you’ve reached your final goal.

Just imagine, write down and post, how you’re going to feel and look on that special night.

If you are waiting for something to happen while waiting in line at the store or at an appointment, there are several things that you can do to continue with your day. Here are ten things to do while you are waiting in any public area.

Plan. If you are at a place in your day where you have either finished the tasks that needed time management, or if you have set your goals, then find a way to move on to the next task and plan what needs to be done next. By setting new goals and time limits, you will be able to find a way to continue to reach your goals for the rest of your day.

Refocus. If you have a busy schedule, use the time that you are waiting to refocus. Go over your schedule for the day, find what you need to do for the rest of the day, and figure out what to do to re-manage your time. If you have a handheld device or a notebook with a list, you can look over what your list has for the day, as well as what your goals are.

Make more lists. If you find that several of your goals have been reached for the day, or if you want to move forward onto a different task, making a different list or rearranging the list that you already have is an easy thing to do while you are waiting. Once you are out of the line or have stepped out of your appointment, you will know exactly what needs to get done next.

Organize your time. If you have your calendar with you, and have already set your lists, then figure out how much time it will take you to complete the tasks and goals that you have on your schedule for that day. Planning out how long it will take you to finish your tasks of the day is an effective use of time while waiting in line or waiting for an appointment.

Bring mail or correspondence to sort through. If you have mail that will need to go out to friends, or things that you need to organize, you can bring these with you. While you are waiting, it is an easy thing to sort through or read while waiting.

Make phone calls. If you have business partners or friends that need you to call them, this is a great time to do so. Because you are waiting in line, you will be able to keep the phone calls short and to the point.

Bring along the smaller tasks. Sometimes, there are smaller things that need to be completed or looked through. If you need to finish a smaller task, doing so while waiting in line is a great time to catch up on what you may have not necessarily have done when the focus was on the larger tasks and goals that were set for the day.

Re-energize. If the day is particularly busy for you, this is a good time to not do anything except wait. Use waiting time as a time to calm down, find your focus, and relax. Downtime is always good and necessary in any day that is full of activities and planning.

Read. If you know that your wait is going to be longer, you can catch up on reading that you need to do. This can help you relax. You can also read things that will help you with your progress for the rest of the day. Reading can often keep you on track for the rest of your day as well.

Catch up on the news. Many different places will have magazines and newspapers available right by the check out stand, or wherever you are waiting. If you don’t bring your own material to read, it’s always good to keep up with the latest news and happenings in the world. This is good to do if you have already organized the rest of your day and made your plans.

If you are going to a place where you think there will be waiting time, make sure to always bring along your planning devices, or any smaller tasks that you will have to do for the rest of the day. This will help you in never having to stand in line or wait for a long amount of time without having anything to do.

Wherever you are waiting, it is always a good time to reschedule, re-energize and continue with your lists and plans that need to be organized for the rest of the day. By using waiting time as a way to continue setting your goals, the rest of your day will run smoothly and more effectively as you are able to continue with your plans.

People set goals for many different reasons. Personal goals can help guide our lives. Aiming to reach nothing means that you probably will. Setting personal goals can help you take control of your life. They can keep you from being a hypocrite in that you will be acting exactly how you say a person should act because you have a goal to reach. Moreover, they will help you feel that you are successful. You have something to work toward, something you can accomplish. Accomplishing that goal or even taking a small step toward that goal will offer a euphoric feeling of success like no other. To accomplish those goals, though, there are several things you must do.

Before you can accomplish any goal, you must first set your goals. It might help to make a list. Try to start by making each goal a positive statement. Making a negative statement like “I will not make a fool of myself” will only hurt your drive to reach the goal. Your list should also be very precise. Be sure you have a way to achieve that goal. Setting times, calendar dates, or amounts will help this measure of precision. As you are setting your goals, be sure to prioritize them. Perhaps you would like to climb Mount Everest and save sixty thousand dollars. If you need the money to make the journey and the climb, it should certainly be listed before the climb. As you make your list, you should set two types of goals. Set both short term and long term goals. Short term goals should be small, achievable items for which you can reward yourself. Long term goals should still be realistic, but they should be slightly more difficult to reach. Above all, do not set your goals too low. This can only lead to self doubt and resentment. One way many people start considering their personal goals is by considering their funerals and working their way backwards through their lives. It might even be useful to write your own eulogy in order for you to decide what you might want to be remembered and though about for. This exercise is not meant to depress you, it is only meant to help you realize how important your life is and what goals you want to meet.

Once you have set your goals, it is time to start reaching them. The first way to do this is to remind your self of them often. If you sit down and make a list of your goals on New Year’s Day, but then you do not even think of your list again until a year later, you probably have not made very much progress toward your goal. It can be helpful to start every day by reminding yourself of those goals. This can help in your drive toward achievement.

Another way to achieve your goals is to tie each goal to a mental picture. Instead of simply making a goal like saving a million dollars by retirement age, tie that to a positive mental picture of sitting in your dream retirement home that you have built with your savings. This can only help as you deposit so much of your hard earned wages into your savings account.

In order to achieve your goals, you should spend some time thinking about each one. Make a few lists on a regular basis. Make a list that discusses the ways to reach your goals, and make another list that looks at what is keeping your from reaching your goals. Information is power in any situation, and it is certainly true of this one.

As you think about each goal, you should also spend some time planning each goal. At least once a year, write down daily, weekly, or monthly steps you should take to help you reach your goal. Look at your plans often, and learn from them. How much are you actually accomplishing? Make adjustments to your plans and to your goals as you feel it necessary. However, do not sell yourself short as you are making adjustments.

Finally, in order to accomplish your goals, stay on track. It might help to find someone who can help you stay on track with your goals whether it is a spouse or a close personal friend. Additionally, reviewing your goals frequently, forming mental pictures, and not overloading yourself with goals can help you stay on track toward your dreams.

Incentives are all around. Think about it! There is the company wide bonus for achieving the customer service satisfaction goal; next is the reward for the most productive team member; the boss also recognizes the most efficient worker, the most enthusiastic assistant, and so forth. The list of recognitions is seemingly endless. Yet what about getting recognized yourself? Do you reward yourself for the things you did well? Do you recognize yourself for the accomplishments you have celebrated? While the boss may not have noticed your daily struggle to meet the deadlines, you have. Yet have you taken the time to reward yourself?

Rewards do not need to be outlandish. They should be realistic, in keeping with your budget, and something out of the ordinary. For example, if you go out to eat each Friday night, this customary trip to the restaurant is not the same as a personal reward. You would have gone anyways. Perhaps an additional dinner out on another night of the week would be in order!

Similarly, your personal rewards should be tied to realistic, and achievable, goals. Do not raise your bar so high that you cannot possibly achieve it. You may wish to reward yourself for accomplished short term, mid term, and also long term goals. This system of rewards will permit you to stay on task, and to also see some direct positive results from your hard work.

It is interesting to note that rewarding yourself will not only increase your personal morale, but it will actually have a positive effect on your time management. Are rewards a valuable time management tool? Yes!

Time management demands a firm grasp of what you are doing with your time. By scheduling your appointments, you keep your day on track and your customers and clients happy. By scheduling your leisure time (or reward time) you will keep yourself happy. By combining both schedules, you will find a realistic set of time that you have left to accomplish the work that will not take you out of the office. At the same time, this combined schedule will remind you of the reward in store for the successful completion of the project, meeting of the deadline, or any other short term reward you may have chosen. In a way, this reward will be the dangling carrot in a world of office politics, next to impossible deadlines, and telephones ringing off the hook!

Rewards will also become highly effective time management tools when you consider how much harder this form of self motivation will make you work to accomplish your set goal. Goal setting in itself is a major component of effective time management, and it is easy to see how a desirable reward could be a great form of motivation.

Another aspect that draws a clear correlation between the art of time management and the carrot of rewards is the simple fact that a highly motivated individual will focus on a project and perform all steps needed to accomplish it. In other words, if you have your recreational time planned, and your appointments set up, the remainder of the time is yours to decide how to make it work the best for the needs you have of it. Suddenly the game of computer Solitaire is no longer so enticing when you realize that it may very well take away from the opportunity to accomplish the short term goal and the coveted reward. Naturally, personal wastes of time are only part of the issue. The other part revolves around the proper usage of all available resources, such as co-workers, team members, and even bosses! Train up your fellow workers so that they may assist you competently and confidently with some of the tasks you have to do. By delegating as much as possible, you will soon find yourself with an easy to handle workload that is not threatening to overwhelm you.

Last but not least, proper planning of both work and fun time will allow you to have a healthy balance in your life. With a healthy balance, you will be able to manage your time effective and consistently.

A Time Management Class

After surveying the growing pile of bills, papers, and photos, you have decided that something has got to change. You understand that you need to learn some solid time management skills, and you wander into the nearest bookstore in search of a cure-all for what ails your schedule. Of course, who has time to read those lengthy tomes? The next natural step is a time management class, after all, once you spend all that money to sign up; you will attend, won’t you? Perhaps you will. In order to ensure success for your and your time management issues, it is imperative to choose a class that works for you. Here are three easy to follow steps that will all but guarantee you find that class.

First and foremost, decide if you are more likely to attend class held at a brick and mortar building, or if you will be less likely to skip class when you can log on any time from the privacy of your own living room. For some the real life benefits that can only be garnered from attendance in live classes are well worth the few hours spent in class once or twice a week. These folks will love the interaction, camaraderie, and competitiveness that class assignments bring. This will keep them faithful to the class and the learning process. Others are not impressed by the outlook of spending what little free time they can squeeze out of their busy lives, sitting in a class. They dread the schedule, and will most likely find valid excuses early into the class to drop it altogether. For them, a class that will be ready and waiting for them at their leisure would be the best way to go. It will permit these students to access the information and course work 24 hours a day, seven days per week, without regard to holidays or office hours. The only commitment needed is the dedication to improving their time management skills. Which category do you fall in?

Secondly, are you in need of personal time management help or is this more business related? If it is the latter, do you want to get your employees or coworkers involved? Naturally, a time management class may need to take a different angle to truly fit your needs for a business related setting, and perhaps an in-office consultation would be the best case scenario. Allowing a consultant to visit your business will permit her or him to see your office in action, and to recognize potential pitfalls but also obvious strong points. Such a consultant will then be able to tailor a class specific to your needs. Most likely this will take the form of a meeting that will not take more than a few hours, but its benefits are liable to last for a long time!

Third and last, take a look at the curriculum and see if it addresses the short term solutions as well as long term problem solving. It is not enough to become proficient in sorting your mail and disposing of unneeded or unwanted pieces of correspondence. While this may be a great clutter decreasing tool for the short term outlook, it does very little to enhance your time management skills for the future. Seek out a class that challenges you to set goals — these should be short term, mid term and long term goals. In the short term you may wish to become clutter-free, but in the mid term, you are probably looking to achieve some new goals, which may be personal or professional in nature, and which will require their own set of time management skills. The same is true for the long term goals. Thus, when choosing a time management class, be certain to find one that does not only deal with the here and now, but instead uses this knowledge as a starting point for future success.

Hopefully you feel inspired to teach out for some time management help. It is hard to get started, and even harder to begin midstream, when your schedule already looks as though sleep is a major commodity. Nonetheless, whatever your situation may be, help is only a phone call or mouse click away, and the classes offered vary greatly in approach and content.

Or maybe soccer moms with a van full of kids? Quite possibly all of the above come to mind. Yet, do you also consider that college students fall into this category? It is true; college kids need time management, too! Still young in heart and mind, these students enjoy a demanding social life; scratching just the surface of business achievement, they need to learn to spend their time wisely to do justice to the academic excellence demanded of them. It is interesting to note that while time management is an almost universal need, it is one of the qualities that do not have a “one size fits all” standard. Time management for a college student is actually quite different from time management for the office worker, soccer mom, or business owner.

When you hear the term “time management,” what comes to mind? Probably busy executives or harried small business owners.

Consider the life of the typical college student: there is a first apartment (or rented room) to be maintained, quite often a part-time (or even full-time) job, and some also find themselves in the roles of caregivers either for their own children or for their ageing parents. With these responsibilities to juggle and a fairly young age at which to juggle them, improper time management will have lasting consequences as evidenced in failing grades. To avoid the latter, here are some practical suggestions to help the college kid succeed:

1. Establish a study place.

Your home is probably fraught with distractions. The television set is right there, roommates are walking through, the telephone beckons, and many other distractions abound. Instead, find a quiet spot in the college library and do as much of your studying there as is possible. Information will be all around you, and interruptions will be kept to a minimum.

2. Keep a schedule.

When you begin your classes, you will be handed a schedule to know on which day to be in which room. You know how long the classes are, what will be done, and which books you will need. If you have a job, you will have received a schedule as well. In your personal life it is no different. Purchase a day planner or use a wall calendar and write down important dates for tests, assignment due dates, quizzes, field trips, study group meetings, and any other calendar item that is of importance. It is also a good idea to record outings with friends. Having your obligations stare back at you in black and white will make it easier to say “no” to friends and family and study for the big test next week.

3. Set realistic goals, go after them, and reward your success.

Don’t go to college with the nebulous idea of “getting all A’s.” Instead, think about the small steps you can take to ensure that you will get good grades in your current course load. Make it your goal to ace all of your classes this semester, and then put a plan into action to achieve this goal. You may wish to take a good look at your calendar and find out when is truly the best time for you to study. Some folks do best in the evening while others do well first thing in the morning. Get to know yourself and then schedule the time that is best for you to achieve your short term goal. At the same time, do not give in to the lure of procrastination! It is easy to leave things for tomorrow, the next week or even until after the holidays. Yet if you give in to this thinking, you will soon find that you run out of time, and jeopardize your goals. Once you have achieved your goals, however, reward yourself! Don’t wait until you graduate summa cum laude to take a trip. Instead, reward yourself in a small way for achieving your short term goals. This will keep you motivated when charting the next set of short term goals and the time needed to reach them.

While it may appear that college kids and their business professional counterparts share much of the same needs, they are still words apart in the methods of attaining the goals and in the opposition to sound time management measures they face. Nonetheless, it is obvious that college kids need time management, too!
