Fast Track Reading is a remarkable new program designed by Insight Professional Development to assist students who have below average reading skills. The teacher is at the helm with this particular program; as he or she is the best candidate to evaluate and decide which students need reading assistance. This is not a “paint by numbers” kind of system. The Fast Track Reading program can be customized to each child’s literary needs.

Reading is a most important and necessary skill. It is vital to being able to properly function and maintain a quality of life in society. No child can afford to drop behind and/or slip through the cracks, and yet so many have over the years. The Fast Track Reading program hopes to be the stopgap for those students; get them back where they need to be, redeeming the time lost and not losing any more ground.

Speed Is Not Just For Keanu Reeves

Introducing Fast Track Reading into your classroom will be like putting jet fuel into a race car; almost immediate, and possibly explosive results. This is a program specifically engineered to sail the students with underdeveloped reading skills and abilities right up the hill to where the rest of the class is. In order to make implementing the program easier and more effective, Fast Track Reading is divided into three sections:

1) The Work Word Strand

2) The Comprehension Strand

3) The Fluency Strand

The Work Word Strand focuses on building a student’s ability to properly sound out words and syllables, have a working knowledge of the alphabet, and be able to spell words correctly. There are many phonetic exercises, workbooks, and books that target those three points.

The Comprehension Strand is geared to helping the student not just sound out words, but to clearly understand what they are reading. Sometimes a child can get so caught up in making sure they say all the words correctly, they do not even realize what they are reading. This section also wins some brownie points for offering students material that does not look down on them, so to speak for their reading handicap.

The Fluency Strand is the last point in the Fast Track Reading program triangle, bringing together all lessons learned in the two other sections. Now that the student has sailed over the phonetic and comprehensive hurdles, they must now kick their reading into a higher gear. The Fluency Strand is aimed at teaching the student how to read faster, with tests and exercises that are timed. When a child realizes how fast they are now able to read, it is no longer a chore or burden to them; reading becomes fun and enjoyable. That is the end result that Fast Track Reading strives for. The better reader you become, the faster you can zip through books.
