Help children learn to share their grief



Don't try to avoid the truth about the losses such as death, robbery, divorce, etc. Always child thinks faster than the normal. If you don't reveal the losses, they don't feel to share their feelings with you. Don't let the kids to feel that they are responsible for the breakup of their parents. Try to listen to child's talk. Focus on the feelings and expressions of your child about the loss. First listen to them, and then give advice. Let the kids to feel their reactions are normal to the loss. If the kid shares more with you he can handle the feelings better.

Ways the child can react to loss:

Assure your helping hand always. Be always there for the kids. They want to feel more secured than ever during the loss. Let the child to express its anger. Some kids love music and dance. Let them express their attitude towards loss through music and dancing. Record them for your kid to listen after few days. Some children maintain the memorial albums and boxes. Let your child to add the memories to them. The child can share his reactions through drawings, or letters. Encourage your kid to be creative to share their feelings and reactions about the loss in his own way.

Giving chance to child:

Don't try to avoid your child to see you crying. It is necessary to child to know that crying is a natural fact. Avoid giving confused messages about the loss. Share some of your own feelings that you had at your childhood. Be open to the children for conversation. Give assurance that they are not alone and you are always with them. Create an environment to express their fears, thoughts and beliefs. Let your child to participate in funeral ceremony of a family member, so that it can get the idea of what is called death. First take a glance on the kid's belief about the loss. There feelings need to be expressed or otherwise they may face physical or mental disorders. Share the religious and spiritual aspects of life and death openly with the child, so that he can recover in his own way.
