Movies rated R, with their theme, language, scenes of violence, nudity, sexual content or drug abuse, may affect your outlook on life in a negative way, regardless of your political or religious convictions. If you really believe in the saying ‘hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil’, you will avoid viewing any movies that carry any obnoxious content or language, whether or not they are rated R. Just as you would shield your child from the influence of any movie that is rated R in the hope that when they grow up to be adults they lead a straight life, so should you consider minimizing the time spent watching rated R movies. Naturally, you would not permit your children to watch such movies like Pulp Fiction, Gladiator, Clockwork Orange, The Passion of the Christ, Saving Private Ryan or Schindler’s List for their graphic content, poor language, nudity and drug abuse because you probably feel that this is a bad influence on your child. Why then do we as adults subject ourselves to such negative influences?

There can be a long debate on how such movies rated R may affect your view of life. Do they actually debase your feelings? Many have found the courage depicted in ‘Braveheart’ to be highly inspiring, despite the picture’s violence and slight nudity. Many others have found its message of one’s sacrifice for someone else’s freedom worthy enough to ignore its negative aspects. Of course, there may be many other movies rated R that have their offensive aspects outweighing the likeable aspects. How would you avoid watching them? Would you go through the movies’ reviews before deciding? Or would you trust your friend’s opinion? You may however decide not to watch, or not let your children watch, any movie that is rated R, be it among the better ones or among the despicable ones. Even if we do choose to keep ourselves and children from watching rated R movies, we can’t expect to never encounter violence, nudity, sex or drug-related issues in real life situations.

While there are no conflicting opinions about the lasting undesirable impact of rated R movies on young impressionable minds or on adults, your outlook on life boils down to finding appropriate ways and means of toughening up those minds so as not to be influenced by anything that is wicked or evil, even outside the movie world. A 100-minute movie rated R may very well keep you mentally occupied with its overriding influence for longer than a 100 hours. There are innumerable cases where, by way of replicating the incidents depicted in a movie, somebody has actually got involved in committing real life crime like rape, robbery, and assault and battery. Or through watching rated R movies, you may feel more inclined to rob yourself of your morals and values related to drugs or sex.

Maybe your religious faith comes to your rescue in this regard. A strong family bonding, as you may realize, is conducive to adopting an outlook that prevents temptations from exciting the primal nature depicted in movies and inherent in almost all human beings. Cutting out rated R movies may seem a bit extreme, but it is an excellent choice if you want to create a positive atmosphere of love and peace around you.

I agree with your conclusion completely, “Cutting out rated R movies may seem a bit extreme, but it is an excellent choice if you want to create a positive atmosphere of love and peace around you.”

We NEVER watch R rated movies in our house. In fact, we rarely watch nighttime television either. The themes in most of the shows on evening TV create the same negative thoughts and feelings that R-rated moves do. Why bombard our lives with fictional worry and stress? I know my life has been happier since making the choice to be selective with what programs we watch.
