The best way a person in grief can be helped is by telling him "I am all ears". Listening is as good medicine as speaking is. A person in grief feels lonely and dejected. He closes himself in a small shell of his own which does not have any outlet. Since it does not have any outlet the grief keeps on piling up inside. We can help the person grieving by providing him a vent to those emotions. We can just sit beside them as friends and as good listeners and giving them an assurance that they are not alone. Sharing our own feelings, pain and losses help them see the world in a better perspective too. We should let them feel the pain and should not try and minimize it because it takes its own time to fade away.

Some tips which could help you

Patience is the key to good listening. A person needs to be patient enough to listen to and bother himself with something that does not concern him at all. We should provide support to the person who is grieving in form of emotional and mental because he is in a very fragile state of mind. We should try and provide stability to the fluctuations that he goes through. We should talk to the person about his feelings and share our own experiences of pain and loss so that they don't feel that they are the only one going through the miseries. Loss is an inevitable part of life cycle and everyone goes through it. We should support them to embrace the harsh realities of life and death. The person who deals with people who are grieving should not get impatient and nervous while listening to them because people tend to talk and cry a lot. So the person should be mentally strong enough to deal with such complex emotion.

Conclusion

We should not make an attempt to tell them over and over again that things will be fine soon. Recovery from grief is a time taking process and needs a lot of patience. We can act as buffers or punching bags to which they can let their feelings out without any inhibitions.
