PTSD : Introduction

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is a severe psychological outcome of constant grief which is influenced by the impact, duration and intensity of the experience. It is aggravated by external agencies. It includes a rush of emotions, nightmares, self-remorse, fatigue, emotional detachment and even leads to higher neurological disorders. PTSD develops after a terrifying tribulation that encompassed physical agitation or the physiological threats. The person who develops PTSD may have been the one who was harmed, the harm may have happened to a loved one, or the person may have been a witness to a critical mind-boggling incident.

Understanding PTSD

PTSD was foremost brought to public notice in relation to war veterans, but it can result from a variety of traumatic happenings such as assault, rape, torture, kidnapping, child abuse, car accidents, train wrecks, plane crashes, bombings, or natural disasters such as floods or earthquakes and tsunamis. These victims become emotionally numb and even passive. They try avoiding situations that remind them of the trauma in turn resulting in reclusive and introvert way of living. It brings with itself hyper arousal, avoidance, dissociation and flashbacks. The health condition deteriorates and mind stops responding to simulations. PTSD hence can adversely affect the normal day-to-day living in an extensive manner. The outbreak results in serious actions being taken up by victims like suicide etc. This can be avoided with professional treatment and expertise of health professionals. PTSD needs medication, counseling and personal attention from family members as well as specialized personnel.

PTSD in a scientific vein

PTSD can be cured by individual psychotherapy, peer group support, aromatherapy, eye movement desensitization, timeline therapy, medication and good interpersonal counseling by trained professionals. The repercussions of grief cause havoc if not taken care of. PTSD hence needs to be taken good care of. An alert, strong self can help curbing PTSD at initial stages itself. Cognitive therapies, psychotherapies psychodynamics, visualization techniques are generally advised to victims. Morale-boosting, self-confidence and positive self-talk are a must during the regime. If the various therapies if considered and practiced dedicatedly improve ones state of mind, health and social well being.
