Self Improvement Doesn't Have to be Hard

Setting out on a course of self improvement can seem like a daunting task. People decide that they need to improve their lives but then get so overwhelmed with the task at hand that they lose motivation and wind up not doing a single thing to make their life better. Self improvement, however, is not such difficult endeavor if it is approached with a positive attitude. Setting a series of small goals in order to reach one larger goal will work much better than looking only towards the larger goal and feeling overwhelmed. Don't smaller goals sound less intimidating than one large goal?

As an example, consider someone who one day decides that she is going to stop smoking cigarettes. She throws all her cigarettes and lighters into the trash and announces to everyone that she is quitting smoking immediately. While it is true that this cold turkey method does work for some people, there are countless other people for whom this method simply does not work. Quite likely, it will not be long before the woman in the scenario is either heading to the store to purchase a pack of cigarettes or instead digging through her trash to retrieve the ones she threw away. What she might have done instead is set small, attainable goals which would lead up to get eventual quitting. Perhaps on the first day she could cut out one cigarette, maybe the next day she joins an online support group for people who are trying to quit smoking. The point is that each day she does something which brings her just a little bit closer to reaching her ultimate goal, and that the steps are so gradual that she does not feel all that deprived.

This method would work well for someone who decides that his new goal is to lose fifty pounds. Instead of concentrating on the large amount of weight he needs to lose, he might instead set small, daily goals which bring him closer to his ultimate goal. On the first day, he might skip the dessert he usually has every night. On the second day, he might take a short walk instead of watching the evening news on television. Each small goal accomplished lends itself to the man's overall feeling of achievement, and with each goal attained he feels more and more as though the fifty pound weight loss is not such a hard goal after all. So that's the trick: people should do one small thing each and every day to bring them just a little bit closer to their ultimate goal. When self improvement is approached in this way, it hardly seems like the difficult task it first appeared to be. Staying positive is easier with a series of accomplished goals, and a positive attitude can do wonders for a person's motivation. Setting a goal is one thing, but staying motivated and on track is the key to eventually accomplishing the goal and setting even higher goals to go after.
