Why do we desire to self improve? Why not just go through life staying exactly how we are today? Life is all about changes. If you don't believe me; tomorrow, pay strict attention to the details in your day. Keep a list of things you notice that stay the same and things that have changed; little things, big things, things that are important and things that are so unimportant that you hardly notice them at all. At the end of the day, read your list out loud and marvel at the number of changes you witnessed in just one day. Now do you believe that life is full of changes? Why shouldn't you change too? Hopefully you will be changing for the better. No one wants to make changes that will make things worse for themselves. Making things better will improve things for you.

Some areas that people like to improve on may be: finances, relationships, education, self-esteem, weight, physical appearance, skill level, and talent, just to name a few. As humans we are all designed to grow, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. We cannot stop the process, even if we wanted to. A baby grows right before our eyes, or so it seems. We learn sometimes without trying, as new experiences happen to us and we adapt to the new information and before we know it we have changed and in the change we have improved from what we used to be. Growing is a natural process. Babies and young children explore their world, learning as they grow, mostly out of curiosity about the things and events that surround them. Adults can become set in their ways and used to how things are and tend to be resistant to change. Therefore we have to make a conscious effort to make a change or improvement in the way we do things. Adults observe something about our appearance or about our life and when we do not like what we see, we decide to change it for the better by making improvements.

Sometimes we feel improvements are necessary because we are forced to make the change. An example of a forced change would be when you find out that your wife is expecting triplets and you live in a one-bedroom apartment. The pregnancy may not be planned, but your future children will need to have somewhere to sleep. A one-bedroom apartment simply is not going to be practical. The changes you may be forced to make to accommodate your growing family may be: job-hunting for a job with a higher salary, and a house with at least 3 bedrooms, 4 preferably. At other times, we make improvements because we desire to have something that we do not have at the present time. An example would be a young woman deciding to make improvements to her physical self, and to her character so that she can attract a husband of wealth and breeding.

Self-improvements may be forced upon us like in the case of a boss telling his employee that in order to keep his job, he will need to take a class in computer science. The employee wanting to save his job will improve himself by taking a computer course. The woman who falls in love with a cute yellow bikini will desire to improve her waistline, so that she will look good in the bikini next summer. Another example would be the single mom who desires to improve her chances of finding employment by taking the GED class at her local community center. She also enrolls in a job placement service so that she can take classes on resume' writing and how to improve her interviewing skills. Some self-improvement skills relate to wanting to live longer by improving our health and may include starting an exercise program under a doctor's guidance and eating nutritious meals centered on the food pyramid. There are many reasons why people decide to set self-improvement goals. No matter what the reasons are, improving your financial state, your education, your job prospects or your health will certainly make you feel better about yourself.
