As a marriage and family therapist, I have encountered people who had reaped many of the rewards that material wealth could provide, but were involved in dysfunctional and unhappy relationships. My counseling experience also involved working with the elderly, many of whom had acquired wealth or a secure nest egg, but were unable to take care of themselves in their golden years. Because they had not cultivated loving relationships they did not have anyone to care for or about them and would have eagerly exchanged their money in the bank for the love of family and close friends.
