Ballroom Dancing
Ballroom dancing can add fun, excitement and social spice to your life. It's also a healthy form of exercise, good for weight control, and an activity you can enjoy as long as you can move around on your feet! Dancing as an activity has the added benefit of being enjoyed with music as a background…and music in itself is stimulating, and emotionally healthy.
Ballroom dancing in some form has been a practice of many societies for centuries. Dancing was an integral part of court life in the era of kings and queens and castles. It was unthinkable that one not have the social skill of dancing if one were associated with the gentry.
Today ballroom dancing is enjoyed by millions in countries throughout the world. During the 19th and 20th centuries ballroom dancing in the US grew from basic forms of fox trot and waltz, then the quickstep and charleston, and finally to include many varieties of ballroom dancing which include Latin dances such as rhumba, tango, cha cha and salsa, as well as individual styles of disco dancing and hip hop.
Many people who enjoy ballroom dancing take regular lessons to become proficient in many dances, and then form groups for regular dancing evenings. Study can evolve into a serious avocation, with dancing students participating in competitions ranging from small regional competitions to major national and international events. Such serious ballroom dancing demands much study and artistic skill, and also involves a large investment in dancing lessons, preparations for competitions, and elaborate costumes.
Ballroom dancing can be enjoyed with a single partner, or with different partners during dancing evenings. The proficient ballroom dancer will be able to follow the lead of different partners. It is perhaps most enjoyable, however, when a couple can study together, become proficient and accomplished when dancing together, and add ballroom dancing to their regular social routine.
