Calming Thoughts and Stress Management

Everyday pressures can cause everyone to feel stressed at some time or another. Demands of work, home, family life and society can leave anyone to feel overwhelmed from time to time. Most unfortunately there are millions of people suffering from stress induced or stress related diseases, ailments or other symptoms of stress and most feel that it is just something they have to live with and can't do much about it. While it is impossible to eliminate or avoid stress there are natural approaches that can be taken to help manage stress and to prevent or control the symptoms of stress.

In the face of stressful times or when having feelings of anxiety it may seem difficult, but calming thoughts are a natural, simple yet effective method of stress management. Often it helps people to realize and think about what stress actually is. Stress is not the phone that won't stop ringing, that coworker who just grates on your nerves, the demanding boss, your family that doesn't always get along, the many chores and bills that need to be taken care of. These things are all stressors, or stimuli. Stress is difficult to define because it is subjective but in all actuality is the body's reaction to a perceived threat and is a natural occurrence. The stress response is often referred to as the flight or fight response. Changes take place in the body that is governed by the autonomic nervous system. At first hormones like adrenaline are released to prepare the body for what it needs to do and then the body finds a way to cope. There are times that stress can be helpful however too much stress or stress that is prolonged has many negative affects on the body and the mind. The body should ultimately return to normal and things should be in balance when the threat is over. Too often this does not happen and this is why so many people say they are stressed and there are so many stress related problems.

Sometimes just being aware can help one to stay calm or be able to feel a little more relaxed than otherwise in the face of stress. Since most of the time people are often stressed because of their perceived lack of control or handle on the numerous things they juggle everyday, knowing this and turning within oneself rather than getting lost in all of the things going on outside can help to remain calm and in control. It helps to be aware of your feelings, level of tension and what is causing them. Taking a deep breath and breathing in calming thoughts, thinking about the positive attributes about yourself, telling yourself that you can overcome, that these pressures are manageable, that what you are feeling is normal can do wonders for achieving a state of calm, being able to think and react to situations clearly and keeping the tension and stress from building up in the body and causing pain or discomfort, things which will in themselves lead to stress.
