Dancing Environments

There are many and varied environments where dancing can take place. Depending upon the type of dancing involved - ballet, musicals, dance lessons, exhibitions, competitions or local ballroom dance events - the venue may be anything from a small studio to a large theatre to a hotel ballroom or space in the local Rotary Club building.

For the sake of general interest, we'll consider the kinds of dancing environments that are generally found for ballroom dancing and for competition dancing. These are of most interest in general to people involved in dancing, and in most of the other environments one would be attending a show or exhibition performance.

Ballroom dance fans may find various environments suited to the level of their dancing interests and skills. For the couple interested in occasional casual, or possibly romantic, dancing, a local dinner/dance club or perhaps a country club, will provide a satisfactory and pleasant place for their dancing pleasure. There may be music from a small band, or perhaps disco. In some cases, there may be a piano bar as well. Dancing is somewhat limited in such locales and would not accommodate executing a sweeping waltz or an animated cha cha.

For those who enjoy and participate in disco dancing, there are often special dance areas set aside adjacent to a night spot or restaurant and bar. Here one can move from the drinking/dining area into the dancing area when desired This type of dancing environment particularly appeals to younger people.

For those who enjoy serious ballroom dancing, there are several environments available in most cities. There are, to begin, studios where ballroom dancing lessons take place. These studios are also often the scene for small dance parties. For social dancing where all manner of ballroom dances can be enjoyed there are numerous possible locales. Sometimes ballroom groups rent space from local clubs or organizations and sponsor regular ballroom dancing evenings. These areas often have an adjacent bar, a few tables and chairs, and an attractive decor.

In resort areas there are usually numerous spots where dancing takes place, often in an area adjacent to a restaurant or club, and frequently in an open air space which offters pleasant and quite romantic dancing environment.

Dance competitions are regularly held in many cities, and on these occasions the locale is usually a large ballroom, probably in a major local hotel. This is an exciting venue with the air of competition dancing and high level performance prevails.
