Get Moving!

Self improvement is a noble aspiration, and one which often involves the quest for a healthier and more attractive body. Since weight tends to creep into a body when a person does not expend as many calories as he or she takes in with food and drinks, the best thing to do when trying to get a better body is to simply start moving around more.

For people who have not been active for quite some time, there is no need to jump right into a rigorous exercise routine. In fact, strenuous exercise after long periods of inactivity may result in injuries. Injuries are not only troublesome, but the negative psychological effect they may have on a person are great: many people decide there is no reason to bother exercising after encountering an exercise-related injury, when the truth is that if they had simply started slowly the injury probably would have never happened to begin with. It's quite natural to be gung-ho once a decision is made to get into shape, but if a body has remained on the couch for years it needs to be gently eased into activity.

It is best to begin with a simple walk around the block or a park. This does not even have to be every single day in the beginning, but rather it is meant to be a method by which a person not only starts to get some physical activity routine started but also perks interest in doing more strenuous activity eventually. Many times a person who is highly fit will admit that their quest to a better body started with them merely walking, and then blossomed into jogging or enrolling in a gym and meeting with a personal trainer. Remember: everyone needs to start somewhere.

After a person is able to walk at a brisk pace without becoming winded, the walks might turn into longer walks or instead perhaps the person will seek out a more challenging terrain such as a hilly street or steep trail. Most folks grow to love their walks, finding the walks not only to be great exercise but also invigorating. For people who spend a lot of time hunched over a desk at work or caring for young children at home, a daily walk can become a true moment of reflection and relaxation. It is also important to remember that if walks do not necessarily spark an urge to join a gym or engage in other forms of exercise it's not necessarily a bad thing. Walking is heralded by experts as one of the best forms of exercise, and if that is all a person does for physical movement then it is certainly better than no form of exercise whatsoever.

Get up and get moving! The road to a healthier body starts with exercise, no matter how little the effort in the beginning. Even if, in the beginning, an exercise routine consists of nothing more than walking the dog down the street and back it is certainly better than no exercise at all.
