Open Your Own Daycare

Earn a living right at home opening a daycare center

If you have a great love for children and are also a budding entrepreneur, why not combine the two and start your own business? A daycare in your home can be an excellent way to earn a steady income and is also one that offers a rewarding and fulfilling career at the same time.

The first step, of course, is to make sure that you have adequate space for a daycare, preferably a separate area from your usual living quarters. A game room, family room or other large space or room could be used depending on the number of children you anticipate having. Also, it would be ideal to have a safe outdoor play area as well.

Depending on which state or area you reside in, there can be varying rules and regulations that must be followed to run a daycare center from your home. There may be limits on the number of children that you are allowed to have there at one time and child to adult ratios that must be followed. These numbers are also affected if you have your own children in the home. It's wise to do thorough research before starting your daycare to ensure that you are following the all of the necessary guidelines or laws.

After learning the specific requirements for your state, you should consider the important aspect of insurance. There are plenty of resources on the internet regarding beginning your own daycare at home and you could also speak with your insurance company or representative.

It's also important to remember that by having your own daycare center, you will be self-employed and are therefore responsible for your own taxes. Be sure to have the necessary paperwork to file your taxes, and also be aware that small businesses may be required to pay them on a quarterly basis. It's helpful to plan for this in your budget so you aren't caught by surprise when the payment is due every three months.

You'll then have the pleasant task of buying all of the necessary supplies such as toys of all varieties, depending on age groups, sleep mats for nap time, bedding for cribs, and extra clothing for accidents as well as food and paper products. There are also diapers and those types of supplies, as well as potty chairs and perhaps training pants, if you will be caring for infants and toddlers.

It's a good idea to check the rates of daycare centers near your home or in the area you plan to advertise. You'll want to be competitive but also flexible, especially when first starting out. You'll also have to decide on your hours of operation, discounts for more than one child per family, what you'll charge for extra time and how often you expect to be paid. It's highly recommended to open a new bank account specifically for your business, which also makes it easier at tax time.

If you aren't already, it's essential that you become certified in CPR and take a course specifically designed to teach first aid for children and infants. There are many parents who would be leery about leaving their child with someone who didn't know CPR, or what to do if the child was choking or had an accident. And of course, there are many people who wouldn't use your services at all unless you knew this critical information.

Even if it isn't a requirement in your state or for the number of children that you may have, it's much better to be prepared for potential emergencies before they happen rather than being sorry later.
