Self-reliance is the only way to truly succeed in life, the old saying comes to mind, "if you want something doing right, then do it yourself" and this is true. While a little help may be needed in some circumstances and certainly should not be passed up, help from others should not become a crutch on which you continually lean. Those who suffer from a lack of self-reliance fall into the trap of procrastination and are filled with self-doubt and avoid situations which cause them distress, fear and anxiety when they have to make a decision.

The problems procrastination causes

Procrastination causes anxiety and stress, when a problem arises instead of meeting it head on and dealing with it or finding a solution to the problem the person hides, turns to others for advice and help or even buries their head in the sand and hopes the problem or situation will go away. Naturally, as things do not work like this the problem does not go away and in many cases only gets much worse, this in turn only cause more distress and anxiety and now the person has placed themselves in a vicious circle. Of course, we all know and understand that the problem will not go away but by hiding, we are gaining relief from the problem or situation at hand even if it is only for the short term. By being self-reliant and taking charge of the problem it means that the outcome would be based solely on ourselves and the choices we made and a lot of people simply do not have the confidence in themselves to do this. Self-doubt, dodging, fear and anxiety are all habits born out of procrastination and they can be overcome, you can learn how to become more self-reliant.

Breaking the habit

Just as with anything that is done out of habit breaking the cycle is not easy and is not something that happens overnight. There are several methods you can use to begin breaking the cycle and start standing on your own two feet again, here are some tips to help get you started.

* Make a list of all the things that need to be accomplished starting with the most important that require your immediate attention and need dealing with first. Realise that you cannot put off things forever and that even if you make a decision which turns out to be the wrong one at least you made a start and did something about taking charge and no one is always right.

* If you had help from books, videos or tapes then don't solely rely on these all the time, where they may have helped at some point realise that you can make your own decisions if you allow yourself

* Practice being more positive and do not put yourself down all time, most of us do not give ourselves credit for what we are truly capable of accomplishing. Take small steps, one at a time and believe in yourself and what you are able to do if you put your mind to it.
